Your clicking finger may be getting weak and lazy now Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2 have passed, but fortunately a new exercise regime is coming soon in the form of Path of Exile's open beta. Grinding Gear's PC action-RPG has been in pre-order beta for a while now, but all and sundry will get to play from January 23.

Path of Exile will run as free-to-play when it launches, funded by microtransactions for pretty things like dyes, pets, and unique looks for items and spells. "We are completely opposed to the concept of 'pay2win,'" Grinding Gear says.

The developer has raised over $1.8 million so far by selling beta membership in a variety of tiers, ranging from $10 to $1,000. They come with in-game currency, items, and other jazz. They'll come off sale once the open beta launches, so buy up now if you're interested.

Here's a recent trailer showing off one player's prized build, and the soon-to-be-opened Act 3:

Has anyone played this? Is it good? How does it compare to TL2 (which I liked) and D3 (which I liked less)? The passive skill tree thing on their site looks pretty cool.

Its pretty fun! My only complaint is death animations are all the same.

I recommend watching this video of how the skill system works, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVI11N3YT7o&list=UUA7X5unt1JrIiVReQDUbl_A , its pretty cool. The way you upgrade and get new items is very unique as well. Theres no gold for currency. Instead theres several items that can enhance items in many different ways. Add sockets, add new affixes, change color of sockets, change links of sockets, upgrade normal item to random rarity, theres a lot more.

If you don't want to drop the 10bux, it'll go to open beta in about 2 weeks

Also worth noting that your $10 gives you $10 worth of microtransaction points.

It starts off a bit slow but really opens up at level 15, when the full breadth of the active skill system becomes apparent. It is much more D2 than either of those others.
This is absolutely a hardcore game for the D2 min-maxers. The sheer depth and interplay of the gear - skill - gem systems provide a staggering amount of choices, and that's not to mention the passive skill tree.

it's great, if you liked D2 more than D3 I think you'll enjoy it.. It's slow going but once you get past the first few hours it gets much better

they're working hard on getting Act 3 and the skills into the game, then they're going back and doing more animations and the like.
The game is far from done

PoE's a hardcore, old-school ARPG without the ability to hack higher level characters to test out a build.

What you think of it will probably depend on how you feel about those games.

The game does do the endgame + event stuff really well, though. They frequently have hardcore races which seem like a lot of fun for min-maxers.

Wellll.... all your skills are swappable as you see fit, since they are set by the gems you use. That said, you level up gems as you use them so while you can go from one (active skill) build to another, you'll probably have to level up those gems or pay a lot in trade for pre-levelled ones. For the passive skills, you get a few respec points but if you wanted to redo your entire passive tree then you'd be in the position of paying a lot in trade for the appropriate items (Orb of regret or something), each one of which will refund one passive point.

So full respecs are possible, but expensive. Minor respecs are easy.

You're not completely locked in, but it takes some effort to respec. Some sidequests give you respec points, and you can get more via item drops.

And you get 24 character slots to start, which is probably enough for most people.

skill system is badass, reminds me of Final Fantasy X. the story and quests are severely lacking. the animations are cool and the monsters have some cool abilities.
