PlayStation 3 drops to $199 at select retailers
by Andrew Yoon, Apr 20, 2012 4:15pm PDTIs an official PlayStation 3 price drop looming? Perhaps new SKUs are on the horizon? Two retailers have dropped the price of the PS3 from $249 to $199.
Amazon currently offers the 160GB system at the discounted rate. GameStop offers the same price, but sweetens the deal by offering a free copy of Batman: Arkham City or Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition.
A Sony representative told GI.biz that the promo was simply a "temporary GameStop promotion," which makes Amazon's price drop likely a price match. Other retailers, such as Best Buy, have not followed suit.
Still, given the low margins on hardware for retailers, it seems like the price drop is a sure sign that something is amiss--especially with E3 only a few months away.
