Assassin's Creed 4 could go further back in time

Future Assassin's Creed games could leap around in time without being beholden to the series forward-moving structure, says an Ubisoft producer.

The Assassin's Creed series has followed a fairly familiar pattern of jumping forward a few hundred years with each numbered installment. Now that Assassin's Creed 3 is hitting the American Revolution, that pattern leaves a relatively short window before we hit modern day. Ubisoft assures, though, that future games may go back in time to earlier points in history.

"It's a question we've been getting a lot," producer Francois Pelland told Metro (via OXM). "It's not a moving forward thing, it's all based on lineage and on DNA and therefore it has nothing to do with time. The next game could easily go backwards as much as forward, no problem."

Assassin's Creed 3 promises to be the end of Desmond's story, so the next numbered game in the series could introduce a new "modern day" protagonist. Or, Desmond could simply have ancestors from other time periods that weren't relevant to the overall plot before. Given how varied the possible locales are for the franchise, it's clear that Ubisoft will keep the franchise going on for a long time.

it sucks that the original vision of the franchise was historical period pieces because what everybody wants to see is the future assassin anyway

Yeah, this news isn't particularly heartening for me - I WANT to see a future-badass-assassin using ultra-high-tech gadgetry (cloaking devices, anyone?), climbing on skyscrapers and gliding across a futuristic city.

Man, if I could just see that within my lifetime...

No Way!, i only like this series because of the unique historic locations. I want Jesus to make my gadgets. Jesus was the Original Ninja Assassin trying to take down the templars, you don't get crucified for telling ghost stories! The game play and wall climbing has been wearing on me abit after all these years. If they just throw that into a skyscraperscape it wouldn't nearly have the impact.

Ok, so, heres what would happen in a future assassins creed game setting. Your running across the rooftops of scyscrapers that are 5 feet apart (unless you have jump boots from portal 2), then all of the sudden, a sniper shoots you in the head, restart. You start running across more building, fall 1000 feet, dissenegrate every bone in players body, restart. Your in the middle of a mission, tailing somebody, you go through a medal detector, they find your hidden blades, 10 man firing squad with m16's fire at you, restart.

yes, but the exciting thing is that everyone's vision of the future is different... history does have some limitations on creativity.

Time is relative. Further back in time relative from who? Desmond? Altair?
Maybe one of the many other test subjects thrown in the animus?

Victorian England, Revolutionary Russia, and Tokugawa Japan are good ones that spring to mind.

"Assassin's Creed 4 could go further back in time"

Why not be bold? Assassin's Creed 4 - Cro Magnon. Altair is racing at breakneck speed to find and kill the man/woman who invents the first wheel, before a first era of human development and imperial expansion can take place, eventually leading to the end of the world.

I believe that the story should stem from an ancestor of a future protagonist that has specific knowledge on how to defeat Juno. That when she emerges from the grand vault, a different branch of the brotherhood that is more elusive than the face of the assassins begins to surface. That they finally defeat the Templars and Juno once and for all

Personally, I think an early China setting would be amazing, I couldn't even imagine all the possibilities that kind of a setting could introduce. That or maybe France
