Weekend Confirmed 92 - Holiday Special
by Garnett Lee, Dec 23, 2011 11:00am PSTJoin us as for our Weekend Confirmed holiday special as we head into this long weekend. Insomniac's James Stevenson and game developer Ariel Angelotti join Xav, Jeff, and Garnett for the festivities. Many of you shared stories of your videogame memories from the season which we enjoy retelling with you throughout the show. We also get to talk about some of the games we've been playing like Alan Wake American Nightmare and Star Wars the Old Republic. There's even a little news as we check in on the release of the PlayStation Vita in Japan and the big Steam sale's contest that will see one lucky gamer win the entire catalog on the service. We even remember to get in finishing moves and our end of the season football tailgate.

I've done it. I've been with groups of buddies and we do it. And it has nothing to do with the thought that the girl can't hold her own, or we hate women or anything.
But the fact is, games are how we vent. We let shit flow out of our mouths as we talk about our days, our relationships, whatever is thrilling us or bugging us. And we don't watch our language or think about who we might be offending.
We don't go out of our way to offend anyone or be hateful, but we do use words like rape, bitches, and if one of our girlfriends is pissing us off, we're there for the guy to joke about how much of a cow she is and how he should leave for somebody younger, hotter, tighter (we're in our late 20s). And the fact is, we've had total strangers in games join in on the conversation, cause they're looking for the same kind of mental/emotional release from a long day/week/whatever.
So we'd rather just leave than watch our language, as we feel we should when we're in mixed company. Sometimes we gather to play games because we WANT a boys club. Videogames have long been the domain of men, and yes that's gradually changing, but it's still what we habitually look to. When we're not looking for that kind of locker-room atmosphere, we're more than happy to play with girls.

Back to my wife's perspective though.
I think it is a natural reaction for anyone who has been the victim of sexist behavior on a regular basis.(or racist, or any kind of discrimination.)
If you get treated poorly because of your gender often enough, I understand how you could begin to jump to that conclusion.
The problem is that you do start to make every issue into a "sexist" issue, even if that has nothing to do with it from an outside perspective.
