Have you forgotten about id's latest shooter, Rage? The open-world FPS came out all the way back in October, making it ancient by today's standards. Still, if you haven't given it a chance yet, you'll be able to sample some mega-texture fun with a free downloadable demo on Xbox Live.

Available now, the hefty 2GB+ demo will send you to Wellspring, "a small oasis of civilization in the Wasteland." From there, you'll have to stop the Ghost Clan from poisoning the water supply. The demo will give you a chance to try both the shooting and driving halves of the game.

The demo is exclusive to Live Gold members for now. It will be available for all Xbox 360 owners next week, and then on PlayStation Network on December 6th. Sadly, there's no word on a PC demo at all. [Update: Pete Hines went on Twitter to say that while there won't be a demo, "Steam allows us to do some things differently than we can do on console." It appears that a free weekend might be in the works?]

If you like what you see, Bethesda points out that the game will be on sale during Black Friday. Retailers, including GameStop, will discount the game in half, prettying it up with a $30 price tag. If you want our word on the game, check out our video review.

Month after it's release and I still can't play on my ATI 5830 ... with the latest drivers... If I roll back to some dinosaur age ones I'm ok, but hell they've fixed a ton of stuff in bf3 and skyrim... what gives!

Those are some high quality textures (I assume that's what that shot is demonstrating)

They better unveil Doom 4 for this year's QuakeCon, or there will be a riot as a result of the fourth consecutive no-show ('09, '10, '11).

        That's hideous.

Is that a streaming bug, or is this literally the quality of the textures in some places?

Those are some great examples of the benefits textures gain from the Mega Texture technology.

It's an ok game but it can't compete with all the other great games released this fall. I'd still wait for a better sale.

I doubt they'll pick a free weekend for PC as, if theres a free weekend i'm blasting through the singleplayer and not buying it.

No demo on the only platform that it actually matters on. :/

That said, whilst the free weekend news is heartening, it's going to take a pre-load to get that 15+Gb down to peoples computers before the weekend is already over...
