The Witcher 2 digital sales breakdown: 81% through Steam

Steam accounted for 81% of all The Witcher 2 digital sales in the first six months, CD Projekt has revealed by announcing its digital sales figures. GOG rung up 35% of the 240,000-odd sales, while all other platforms combined only made up 4%.

The size and state of the PC digital distribution market can be difficult to assess, as platforms and publishers are largely unwilling to share their sales figures. When it comes to The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, though, there can be little doubt about where they all stand, as CD Projekt today revealed the RPG's first six months of digital sales figures.

Who came out on top? Steam, by a huge margin, followed by CD Projekt's own Good Old Games.

Roughly 240,000 copies of The Witcher 2 were sold across all digital distribution platforms between its May 17 launch and October 30, CD Projekt revealed. Steam accounted for over 195,000 of these (around 81%), while Good Old Games rung up "approximately" 35,000 (15%).

All other other digital distributors combined--including GamersGate, Direct2Drive, Impulse, and Amazon--only managed "approximately" 10,000 sales (4%-ish) between them.

"The digital sales of The Witcher 2 have exceeded our expectations," CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwiński said in today's announcement. "We are even more pleased that our own platform GOG.com had such a great share in the Witcher's success."

"The performance of GOG.com in selling new titles is not completely surprising, as we have said for years that DRM isn't necessary. It is gratifying to see that the only platform that offered The Witcher 2 DRM-free from launch has performed so well."

In 2009, a number of digital distributors bickered over who exactly was in second-place behind Steam, but none had actual figures to draw meaningful comparisons. For The Witcher 2, at least, the picture is quite clear. Now, let's all cross our fingers and hope for this sort of transparency from other games and companies.

That's not a very high total number, IMO. Does anyone know how it did at retail?

I don't see why Valve would be pissed for having the vast majority of market share.

That said, I think this kind of shows how the "digital revolution" of PC games is still somewhat overstated if the digital sales only representated about 25% of their overall sales, especially since in most places this was a game that was $10 cheaper at digital outlets.

Agreed regarding the importance of digital sales. I think that Valve has a policy of not disclosing sales and this information can be used to measure those sales, though if only approximates.

I have nothing to back this up but I recall reading that Valve thought it was up to the pubs to disclose their own sales figures for themselves -- Valve didn't want to presume to disclose that for them.

overall sales was approaching 1 million after 2-3 months last time they talked about it.
        http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-08-30-witcher-2-sales-are-nearly-1-million

        the game sold mostly retail.

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales-data/39247/the-witcher-2-assassins-of-kings/ has 650.000 retail copies listed

like the first one it sold in very specific regions, like germany and russia/poland which are retail country.

its sold significantly worse in america like the first game as well but it evens out somewhat assuming the majority of steam sales/digital sales on steam being north american.

Had the same thoughts. Deserved to do better than I imagine it did from these figures. I know GeorgeB has argued digital has always been less than retail but I don't find this encouraging after becoming used to hearing about titles seilling 1m+. If RPGs still sell thru then this deserved to sell.

It's a European game. They don't buy digital for some reason, they still prefer retail.

it sold slightly better than the developer originally anticipated but worse than it deserved or they hoped for. the first game needed a year to sell 1 million copies. something that witcher 2 has done in a few months but at the same time it also was eight times as expensive to make (1 million to 8 million bucks). at least the developed did get a decent share of the money without the middleman distributor on their own gog.com platform.

Yeah, I really don't see how Witcher series will stay on PC only from now on. We can say whatever about the console "peasants," but they're the ones who keep studios open. Too much piracy on our end. If someone who's savy about stealing games online has a choice of buying a single player only game or stealing it, guess what they'll do?

Buy it on steam, probably. At least if they buy games at all. No use in looking at the habits of people who never would buy any games, because they generate no sales no matter the scenario.

I bought mine through GOG for the free bonus material, slight price discount, free additional GOG game, to support the developers directly, and support brand new games launching with no DRM.

Guess I fell into the minority. I seriously thought GOG.com would pull more sales.

I am surprised it didn't have more as well. I bought it at full price at launch from GOG to support them even though I know that I wouldn't have time to play it right away.
