New Mortal Kombat movie and game planned for 2013
by Andrew Yoon, Sep 29, 2011 4:00pm PDTThe Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series may be turning into a big screen movie. New Line Cinemas is attempting to produce a new film from the same creative team, and release it in 2013.
"The new game and the online shorts prompted us to consider a reboot of a brand we hadn’t been actively thinking about," New Line president Tony Emmerich said said. Emmerich is hoping to best the success of the previous two Mortal Kombat films, which he says "haven't aged well."
Kevin Tancharoen, director of the web series, would return for the movie, and will portray the Mortal Kombat characters in a "more realistic" way. The budget for the new movie is expected to be "well under $100 million," according to the Variety report (via Joystiq).
However, there's one possible bump in the road. Development of the movie is currently stalled as Warner Bros. and Lawrence Kasanoff, a producer on the first two movies, must resolve litigation surround royalties and ownership of the movie rights.
If the movie continues production, the plan is to have the film coincide with the release of the next game. The hope is that the game will come out when the movie his theaters, or potentially package the game with the movie in a DVD/Blu-ray combo.
