Weekend Confirmed 78 - Gears of War 3, TGS '11
by Xav de Matos, Sep 16, 2011 12:00pm PDTWeekend Confirmed and the 8-4 Podcast have merged into one during the Tokyo Game Show once again! Garnett Lee and the crew at 8-4, Ltd.--behind such games as Shadow of the Damned--discuss their experience in Japan during TGS 2011. Then, Jeff Cannata and Xav de Matos take over from sunny, southern California and talk about Gears of War 3, the nefarious pricing structure of Crimson Alliance, and a handful of other games before ending it all with a few Twitter questions. The US segment was so quick that the WC Crew didn't even have time for Finishing Moves!

This same argument extends into piracy as well. Neil Gaimen's talk on book piracy is fantastic:

Now you can certainly argue that book sales are a different beast than other media, but I think the general concept is still applicable. Piracy, used sales, lending to a friend - only puts your media in front of more eyes, which will only be good for your product and brand in the long run.

They have system in place where they cut off returns for games after a certain number has been hit. Try returning Bioshock 2 to a Gamestop, and they'll tell you 'no, we don't accept that game anymore'. They have safeties in place to protect themselves from buying more than they can handle.
Likewise, the vast majority of their profit comes from used games. That's why they push trade-ins so damn hard all the time. They make an obscene amount of profit off of used games by marginally undercutting the price of new ones.
So let me just ask you a hypothetical question. How much is used game X worth in the marketplace? Is it worth the amount that Gamestop pays for it ($20 or much less)? Or is it worth the amount that Gamestop sells it for ($30 or much more)?
It can't be both. But even in an age where craigslist, ebay and amazon give gamers the ability to buy used games for much less and sell their games to other gamers for more, Gamestop adds a 50% margin just for collecting used games in one place.
