Uncharted movie 'going back' to the game
by Andrew Yoon, Jul 19, 2011 3:15pm PDTFans were up in arms when they heard about David O. Russell's Uncharted film adaptation about a family "that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and metes out justice." Just like in the games! Right?
Since then, Russell has left the project, with Neil Burger taking over the Hollywood adaptation of Naughty Dog's adventure series. Thankfully, Burger won't follow the footsteps of his predecessor and will, instead, focus on what actually makes the series so beloved by its fans. "There’s a lot of cool stuff, actually, from the videogame, if you know it."
Apparently, Russell's original screenplay is being completely thrown out, affording Burger with the freedom to adapt the film more closely with the original games. "We’re beginning from scratch and going back to the videogame," he told CraveOnline.
Since Russell's departure, many have wondered if Mark Whalberg would continue to be attached to the project as lead character Nathan Drake. It appears that everything is up in the air, including the possibility of casting fan-favorite Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly) for the role. "That was brought to my attention. So, you know, I think he’s a good actor," Burger responded. "I think there’s a lot of really good actors who don’t even look like [Nathan Drake] who could play it!"
Don't expect a decision to be made any time soon, though. The newly restarted project is barely in its infancy. "Where we are right now is that we’re literally starting from scratch on the screenplay, and I think that once we finish it, then we’ll go to actors and see who’s available and who’s right for the parts."

But you know the movie doesn't have to be written the way the game is. A good writer would look on this as an opportunity to write an unofficial Iindy 4 that is actually fun and has some of that freshness and zest to it that the old movies had.
