by Xav de Matos, Jul 15, 2011 2:00pm PDTWith Garnett Lee on vacation it's up to Jeff and Xav to drive the bus. Helping them keep the Weekend Confirmed bus out of the ditch is Totally Rad Show co-host Dan Trachtenberg and DJ Andy Reid from 44th and Filth. The crew talks Ms. 'Splosion Man, Alice: Madness Returns, Dead Space 2, Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012, and more. In Listener Feedback we talk about if Nintendo has aged along with its old school fanbase and whether or not Call of Duty is the media's favorite whipping boy, among a few other topics. Then we slow things down and tackle the biggest news of the week, including discussion on EA's acquisition of PopCap.

I feel a little bit like the discussion has veered into this "Kids games vs mature/hardcore games" debate. In my opinion, this is not the issue Nintendo is struggling with at all.
Games like Mario and Zelda are just as "Hardcore" as anything. Likewise, games like LBP or Sonic & Sega All Stars are just as family friendly as any Nintendo game.
The problem for me is this: What range of experiences does a console allow me to explore?
When Nintendo created the Wii, they designed the system around a particular kind of experience that wasn't available on other consoles (with the Wii remote's motion capabilities).
But, they also neglected a far wider range of experiences in designing the Wii, due to the hardware itself and it's online capabilities.
When I bought my 360 and PS3, I did so knowing that any kind of gaming experience I want to enjoy will be available on those platforms. Massive open world games, intense shooters, online trivia games, hardcore competitive fighters, indie games.... they're all possible and available on the 360 or PS3. The Wii just isn't capable of delivering many of those experiences on a remotely contemporary level. It's not just about graphics, its about everything. Why would I buy a home console that simply can't play anything new or groundbreaking? (just my personal choice... not knocking anyone who feels otherwise).
Now, some people are happy to purchase a Wii specifically for the experiences it does offer, and that's great. But I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who already has 2 consoles. Buying a 3rd would require a heavy incentive.
Now, Nintendo is trying to show me the WiiU and say "This is what you wanted! Nintendo games with better graphics AND the 3rd party games you like!" But I can't help thinking that they missed the point. By the time the WiiU comes out, I won't be interested in this generations experiences. I will be interested in the next generation.
2 years from now, will the WiiU be able to deliver the NEXT generation of videogaming experiences? Or will it still be repeating the experiences we've all been enjoying for 6 years now while Microsoft and Sony are blazing forward into uncharted territory? This is the question Nintendo needs to answer if they want me as a consumer to be excited about their new console.

I'm not being insulting I just don't think you have anything to complain about. You didn't get suckered into buying a Wii and then never play it. So in this next gen just again don't buy one and sit there and tell us how nintendo games are dumb with no real background on any of the games.
