Most of the explosion in the video game market in the last few years has been in motion control, social gaming, and mobile gaming. Do you think "core" gaming has stagnated in terms of growth compared to that? I'm talking independent of general population growth here.
It seems to me that a lot of the problems with gaming today can be attributed to production budgets that have blown up faster than the audience to justify them. A couple genres like shooters and WRPGs have grown, but in terms of everything else there just don't seem to be enough people willing to pay $60 for these games.

I think more could be happening in other genres to widen audiences, such as sport and racing. However, there's always some negativity when developers attempt to simplify their games through streamlined controls etc. Take a look at Fable, FFXIII etc.
I think Forza does a great job of delivering a fun experience to the most casual of players all the way through to the most hardcore enthusiasts.
I'm going off track a bit here, but in terms of pricing and the obstacle that presents for growing the core audience, i think the market needs to move to the multi-tiered pricing system that has been discussed in this community so often. I think platforms such as the iPad will lead that initiative, as well as XBLA and PSN as experiences being delivered through those portals become more robust.
