If Microsoft was smart they would have pushed Child of Eden as an amazing Kinect experience, but they didn't. Huge wasted opportunity. But when the Xbox 360 is selling 500,000 units a month and a large number of those are probably kinect, I guess they didn't really feel the need.
Shadows of the Damned was never going to sell. EA basically gave up on the game making money when it was rebooted (twice, I think), but they pushed it out as a prestige piece, something to help their reputation with hardcore gamers and media (not overtly... media will just be even less likely to lump EA in with other publishers they next time they editorialize about the lack of new ideas or IPs).
Think of it like the movie industry. Disney didn't publish Reservoir Dogs through it's Miramax brand because they expected to make a huge profit on it, they did it because they new it would appeal to the art-house scene, maybe win some awards, and give the brand some cred for that niche audience.
And then, every so often, one of those properties they don't expect to make a buck on turns out to be a Pulp Fiction...
