Weekend Confirmed 67 - Ocarina 3DS, Dungeon Siege III, indie games
by Garnett Lee, Jul 01, 2011 12:15pm PDTSummer has arrived and Weekend Confirmed is ready to take it on with "Indie" Jeff Mattas joining Jeff and Garnett along with special guest Billy Berghammer. They start the show in Whatcha Been Playin? with a quick second look Shadows of the Damned, a first take on Dungeon Siege III, and Billy's playthrough of Ocarina of Time on the 3DS. Jeff brings a smorgasbord of indie games including Frozen Synapse, Jamestown, and Atom Zombie Smasher. The group moves on to discuss whether "community" in games can evolve beyond badges and stat keeping. And in the news the talk turns to the landmark Supreme Court ruling and World of Warcraft going free-to-play--or has it--before wrapping things up with Finishing Moves.

Really, really unimpressed. I expect this kind of thing from Giant Bomb, because their bias against Japanese games is blatant, but come on. I expected better from this podcast.
Then again given the fact that Kat Bailey was the only one during E3 who bothered to any kind of checking about the status of these games, because the rest of the gaming press has spent the last five years slagging on Japan - or doesn't want to risk their free review copies of games.
I guess Japan only matters when they make Western style shooters, like Shadows of the Damned.

As for being indignant, I only got indignant because the gaming press in the U.S. seems so utterly indifferent to this situation, probably because these games aren't shooters with significant online play and the characters don't look like the space marines from Gears of War.
As for Garnett's comment :"I'm not sure how much bearing our pundrity would have on the matter other than to say this is a bad deal."
Well, you've covered studio closings which have basically amounted to the same sort of discussion. And there's more meat to this story about how Nintendo is trying to convince the "hardcore" to pick up the Wii-U yet are ready to leave a barren line up for their current console.
Sorry, but I just don't buy that as an excuse.
