Weekend Confirmed 67 - Ocarina 3DS, Dungeon Siege III, indie games
by Garnett Lee, Jul 01, 2011 12:15pm PDTSummer has arrived and Weekend Confirmed is ready to take it on with "Indie" Jeff Mattas joining Jeff and Garnett along with special guest Billy Berghammer. They start the show in Whatcha Been Playin? with a quick second look Shadows of the Damned, a first take on Dungeon Siege III, and Billy's playthrough of Ocarina of Time on the 3DS. Jeff brings a smorgasbord of indie games including Frozen Synapse, Jamestown, and Atom Zombie Smasher. The group moves on to discuss whether "community" in games can evolve beyond badges and stat keeping. And in the news the talk turns to the landmark Supreme Court ruling and World of Warcraft going free-to-play--or has it--before wrapping things up with Finishing Moves.

Now that I've seen Catwoman gameplay, and seeing the "hype trailer" for the 15 minute demo of Bioshock Infinite on GameTrailers, I kind of have a whole different perspective on those two titles (vs what I saw the week before E3 of Batman, and the brief Bioshock trailer at Sony's press conference).
So I'm just kind of scratching my head here. Like speaking of the awards discussed in last week's show, I'm wondering where the category was for "best game shown behind closed doors." Or "best game based on content actually released to the public."
If a publisher excludes its game FROM the show, why do they have the right to be considered for game OF the show? Does a voter for those awards have a right to consider embargoed content?
What is the purpose of these awards other than free marketing if they're not based on what everyone has actually seen?

I got to see them all, so it wasn't a matter of feeling left out, it was more a matter of 'If you're going to show the game, show the damn game. Don't pick and choose people to deem 'fit' to see the damn game.
It defies the nature of a trade show. Either your product is fit to be shown or it's not. Pick a side, and put yourself out there you fence-sitting bastards.
But yes, judges get to decide game of show based on everything, including embargoed content. In fact, they frequently get to play games that are otherwise unplayable to the rest of the press, exhibitors, or whatever the hell everyone else is...
I can't imagine going to E3 without a press pass. You have to wait in lines, you don't see most of the good stuff... it's a waste of fucking money.
