A news article on Slashdot, a response from former id programmer Zoid, who's now working at Retro Studios, in which he states that the fact that he wanted to keep learning new things was one of the reasons he left id. Thanks Ant.

It's obvious that at id, one person has the opportunity to grow, try new things, and reinvent his job every 12-18 months. Hint: it wasn't Cash, Zoid, Hook, or Abrash.

I agree with Zoid. I am pretty young myself (24) and I worry sometimes what will happen to me when I get older and if my ability to learn new languages slows down. Right now I have to constantly read to keep up with all that is going on, and in any industry where you have very little breather room burnout is likely to happen.

I am lucky right now that I love my work and am very passionate, but we are not lawyers - we can not eventually rest on the merits of our reputation. Reputation means very little in the software industry.

Then again, if I ever get bored I could become a manager (ack) like so many older programmers.

Had to rant.
