by Garnett Lee, Apr 22, 2011 11:00am PDTLike millions of happy gamers, the Weekend Confirmed crew eagerly jumped back into the joys of testing in Portal 2. But there's a lot more to keep guests EGMi's Andrew Pfister and Billy Berghammer, and Jeff and Garnett busy. Mortal Kombat has them in fighting spirits and a full report from Bethesda's recent spring showcase includes a deep look at the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Prey 2. There's also news of the next Wii hardware, codenamed "Cafe," and the brouhaha over Portal 2's ARG in the news before closing things out with Finishing Moves.

Comments
If Mortal Kombat can actually make a comeback after what it had become, does that give anyone else hope for Sonic the Hedgehog?
(This comment is only half-joking, I actually didn't hate Sonic 4, or Colors, or Rush for that matter, but I'd fricking kill for a new game in the series to be as good as the original trilogy)

The big issue for me is the dial-a-combo controls.
In SF or VF, you punch a button and depending on the animation involved, the result is immediate or close-to-it. Generally speaking, you have to wait for the first hit to land (or close to it) before you can combo off of it.
So on the offensive, you can quickly cut off combos and throw in different attacks to switch things up and throw off opponents if they block.
On the defensive, you can interrupt the combos at any point in the chain (assuming you aren't being juggles or stumbled or whatever), by timing your attacks properly, or dodging, or blocking or whatever.
In MK, you can literally punch in a 6-hit combo before the first hit lands. In fact, for many characters YOU HAVE TO, because that's the timing the combos call for. So you basically dial the combo in, and wait for it to play out. Oh, and pray that it doesn't get blocked, cause that will open you up for punishment.
There are other issues. Each of the characters has a limited selection of moves, so players only have so many strategies to work with for each character. There are relatively few defensive options. You can block, or you can use a segment of your special bar to reverse an attack. That's it. Very limited.
