... okay, before this statement gets misconstrued, the point I want to make is that the larger context doesn't really factor in. John Davidson is apologizing to his wife not because the dialogue isn't clever, but because she isn't going to listen to every line of it. It doesn't really matter if she's actually wrong in her assessment, she's assessing the situation based on the limited information she's received. I'm sure that years of marriage has taught Mr. Davidson all to well his chances of success should he decide to point out how wrong his wife is, as compared to just apologizing and getting on with his day.

At the end of the day, whose problem it is, whose too concerned with whom, whatever... It just seems to me to be the most basic of manners to say two stupid words to someone whose upset. It's like holding a door open for someone whose right behind you, or saying "excuse me" when you've bumped into someone. It doesn't matter if it's their fault, you just say it because that's the civil thing to do.
That's just how I was raised, I guess.
Actually, I think you're right in that this is not at all the time or place for this discussion, but I sort of disagree. I think people these days are way too quick to dig their heels in the sand and play the "I don't care what you think" card at even the slightest hint of criticism.
