Meet the new Shacknews in a video tour
by Garnett Lee, Feb 23, 2011 4:01pm PSTHello, World
Good, it looks like this thing is working. Welcome all to the new Shacknews! Yes, as your first look already told you, we've given the place a massive overhaul. When we started talking about redesigning the Shack, we decided to go all the way and not just slap a new coat of paint on things. The changes you see--and those you don't behind the scenes--throughout the site reflect months of work toward the goal of creating a better Shacknews experience.
Clearly, the front page is a departure from the blog format of old. We absolutely intend to continue reporting the video game news of the day as our core content. And we have a revised news page for that as well if you prefer the traditional "river" view. The new Shacknews home page comes at things a little differently. The visual approach gives us an easy way to quickly present the best stories of the moment. It results in a page you can quickly scan to see what stories you might want to check out right away.
We also wanted to better support the community that forms the heart and soul of the Shack. That starts with a new and improved chatty. It now runs on a 24-hour cycle, meaning you'll never again get cutoff by the Morning Discussion or Evening Reading reset. We also bring in headlines from our news stories as a new root post. This puts the conversation for a story in one place and makes it easy to sit on chatty and see everything that's going on as well.
It's an all new Shacknews underneath the hood as well. Not nearly as flashy, but maybe most important of all the upgrades, the end result should be a consistently responsive site. We also modernized many of the things you use everyday like the new screenshot viewer and video player.
Enough talking about it, we're eager for you to get in and see what we've been working on. We put together this brief video walkthrough as a quick way to get familiar with the lay of the land. Give it a look, play with the new site, and thanks for being part of the Shack. We know this is a bold change. It's also just the starting point. There's a lot still to do and we'll be closely watching all the suggestions and comments.

Comments
Only problems i have with it are:
- (Videos) lack of iOS compatible videos (PLEASE!!!)
- (Videos) Fullscreen videos on a browser have no controls?!?!
- (Site) Still want to be able to click on something that says "PC" or "PS3" and see stuff that relates just to that platform
Good things:
- White is nicer :-)
- Game pages are cool
Apart from that I'm coming around to it.
Cheers

Traded off a highly usable and efficient layout for a wanky and generic piece of shit layout that every other site had. The main reason shack was my main site was the excellent no BS layout, and the comment system.
Time to find another site, or hack up something that makes shack more digestible.
And the colour scheme and layout is really quite unpleasant - its also unable to handle zooming for people with vision disabilities.
Seriously, the new one really sucks!
It's wayyyyy too bright.
And the home page should go to the *news*; this site is shack*news* after all.
Ugh!
I know that doesn't mean anything to a site funded by ad revenue (which is clearly demonstrated by the add motivated redesign), but I thought I would point out that adblock users are subjected to even more redesign misery.

This design however, lost the particular personal charisma the old one had. But I still like it. I think the if you make a orange theme you can switch to via cookies, you'll get a lil less drama from the others that really miss the old design.
But this looks dope and I'm sure its improved on the back-end also. Probably easier to manage, back up, and make optimized to run better.
In short: Give me an orange theme to switch to and this design will rock!

Otherwise, nice work!
Please revert! I'm not sure how something like this got approved but you guys missed the boat here.

Seriously, bring back the old shack... like, now.
As someone else commented, /news is the only way I can tolerate this new design.
But jesus, it's so BRIGHT. Turn it down!
This redesign is terrible. Hopefully it gets changed soon or I'm going to find another news source that doesn't try to flash burn my eyes.
Now we can search the game and have every info and details of it, along with screens, videos, news, etc.
The New games and Upcoming games is also great. We can check the last released games and see the date of the upcoming ones!
Great work Shacknews!
IT looks like there should be a background that isnt loadnig. Am i posting in the middle of a server refresh? This looks like absolute WANK
Dead or Alive 3
Max Payne

What other good gaming news sites are there now (that arent annoying as all hell)?
Good luck to Garnett, ECO, Gamefly, and company, and I hope the site finds better stewardship in the future.
R.I.P. Steve, Maarten, and Jack, I know they never would have done this with the site.

The new site is pretty cool I think after giving more time to people to use the site some might change their opinions but as modern as the site looks I don't like not having the articles laid out how they used to be even if I do like the better navigations system,
A new design isn't going to keep me away from this gem of a community.
I hope shacknews suffers the same fate. This site redesign is a complete mess. I, for one, used to visit the shack 4-8 times a day. Now, I don't think I'll visit at all. I shouldn't have to wrestle with a shit design to find the information I want.
bluesnews, here I come. See ya later shack. It's been fun.
Overall its nice, keep up the good work :)

I've tried reading this site over the last day and it just doesn't work for me. It actually hurts my eyes and I can't find anything I want to read since I only get a 2 sentence synopsis.
So I have to say farewell to one of the best communities out there. Be good.
Not sure if this or Gizmodo/Lifehacker/etc is the worst.
2. When you click on a link to another page of comments, you're brought to the TOP of the resulting page, instead of to the comments section on that page. Equals: Click, scroll scroll scroll, click, scroll scroll scroll.
3. Check out that Top Games list. Cool games, bro! I love Amp'd!

The actual site design, ie; Games, News, Files, etc is pretty good although it is pretty bandwidth heavy. Keep working on it guys.
I've been reading shacknews for the last couple of years on a daily basis. But with this redesign i wont continue to do so and switch to e.g. bluesnews.
I'll check back again in a few weeks in hope that you care about your readers and switch the design back.
