Call of Juarez Going Modern with 'The Cartel'; Coming to PC, Xbox 360, PS3 this Summer

Ubisoft is bringing Call of Juarez into present times, the company announced today in a press release. Titled Call of Juarez: The Cartel, the game is scheduled for release this summer on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

The game takes players from Los Angeles, California, to Juarez, Mexico. The name and setting imply that it will revolve around the real life gang violence currently plaguing Juarez and the surrounding areas. Developer Techland [Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, nail'd] will have to exercise caution if they want to treat the subject matter respectfully.

Ubisoft's last attempt to revive the franchise, Bound in Blood, was also developed by Techland and received generally favorable critical reception. We'll have to see how updating the western with modern themes and weapons impacts the quality.

What a terrible idea. They've took two good games that built up a good fan base, people that like a traditional western game and completwly screwed them with this idea. Which moron decided going 'modern' would be good. This is the kind of idea that'd only appeal to the mindless droves that have no idea what a real western actually is.

Red Dead was one of the biggest selling games this year. The only recent alternative to RDR was the last Call of Juarez. So, who's going to take advantage of this huge western fan base? Not this game.
