Evening Reading

Another NFL season comes to a close this weekend with what looks like an epic game in the making. For the ensuing months after ends, I won't forget about sports completely. I'll get into March Madness, watch the NBA Finals--and maybe some playoff games if there's a good matchup, take in a few baseball games. But really, I'll be flirting with these other sports to tide me over until training camp gets going marking the beginning of the new season.

I wonder if the same sort of thing happens to gamers with more specific tastes than mine. Like, does an Oblivion fan fool around with Borderlands sort of half engaged while waiting for Skyrim? It's hard for me to judge because I like a wide range of games and the problem I always face is deciding which ones get my time.

While we ponder this and other grandiose questions, here are the highlights from today's video game news on the Shack:

Mario game music are pretty much universally good. But what are your favorite 3?

1. Super Mario Rpg. Shimomura's first take on mario is just good. Was also some of the best music that came out of snes imo.Mallow sad song. How can you hate that?

2. Mario Galaxy. First nintendo (almost) full ochestral soundtrack. Brilliant.

3. Super Mario Bros 3. Did some crazy stuff for nes. Love world 5's reggae music.

HTPC setup

When I hook my desktop up to my LED-LCD TV, the screen slightly runs off all 4 sides. I have to adjust the screen size and position via the Nvidia control panel, creating a custom resolution slightly lower than 1080p to get the desktop to display properly. It's not that big of a deal, except that I know there are plenty of games that do not recognize custom resolutions.

Is there a different or more elegant solution to this kind of thing?

Giant Communist Robots (ticker GCR) is about 5 men strong, and more are looking to join (put in applications with the corp if I'm not online, people!). Since we're starting to have a crowd in Perpetuum, we're trying to have a corp operation this weekend. When do you guys want to have it? Saturday is probably best with the Superbowl on Sunday.

Shack Computer Repair Voltron assemble!

I have a computer here that was working fine and I upgraded it to 2GB with new RAM. My friend wanted an old hard drive put in there, so when I removed the metal cage, installed the hard drive, plugged the IDE and power cord in, the BIOS get stuck at Detecting IDE Drives ...

So I unplugged the drive, tried again, same thing. Unplugged all IDE cables and power cords, still the same thing. I tried to go into BIOS setup to reset the BIOS settings and I can't get in setup because it just stays at Detecting IDE Drives ... So then I removed the memory and put the old ones in, unplugged everything except for VGA cable and PSU cord. No hard drive or CD ROM drive are plugged in. There's no cards in the PCI slots and I'm using the mobo's integrated video.

Anyone know what the problem is? Any solutions, because frankly, I'm stumped. :(

Looks like the patch for Bonded Realities is in testing right now. Not sure what all this one includes other than somehow making the boss fights more challenging. I'm interested in seeing how they went about making them difficult. Hopefully it's not just a matter of ramping up their hit points and attack damage.

So, now that I have two kids (6 and 8 yo) living with me I want to create a stripped down account for each of them on my Windows 7 machine. I've already created a standard account for each of them and removed everything from Start/Programs but I can still get into the control panel, windows explorer etc from their accounts.

What's the best way to lock these accounts down?
