Evening Reading
by Garnett Lee, Feb 04, 2011 5:00pm PSTAnother NFL season comes to a close this weekend with what looks like an epic game in the making. For the ensuing months after ends, I won't forget about sports completely. I'll get into March Madness, watch the NBA Finals--and maybe some playoff games if there's a good matchup, take in a few baseball games. But really, I'll be flirting with these other sports to tide me over until training camp gets going marking the beginning of the new season.
I wonder if the same sort of thing happens to gamers with more specific tastes than mine. Like, does an Oblivion fan fool around with Borderlands sort of half engaged while waiting for Skyrim? It's hard for me to judge because I like a wide range of games and the problem I always face is deciding which ones get my time.
While we ponder this and other grandiose questions, here are the highlights from today's video game news on the Shack:
Killzone: Mercenary shoots onto Vita on September 10
Trion Worlds hit with more layoffs, Defiance team impacted
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault defending Vita next week
Game & Wario was originally going to be pre-installed on Wii U
The Last of Us digital download lets you start playing sooner
Weekend PC download deals: Borderlands 2 for $11
Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection coming to PS3 in July for $50
Madden NFL 25's $99 'Anniversary Edition' includes Sunday Ticket
Final Fantasy 8 getting PC re-release (in Japan)
More Game Gear titles headed to 3DS eShop

I played the prologue and part of the intro to AC2 last night (before finishing AC1) and the difference in tone is kind of jarring, both visually/aesthetically and in presentation. AC is gritty, with film grain and bombastic weight and a stoic/driven hero in Altair, but the first ~30 or so minutes of Ezio were happy-go-lucky and carefree and saccharine and the graphics seem...worse somehow. The textures look far less detailed and more DOOM3 plasticized, but that may be the lack of the film grain. They also completely changed Lucy's model; she's taller and slimmer and what's with the reappearing finger?
I should go to bed. The wife is in Puerto Rico on a momcation and the boys will be waking up in ~6 hours. =/
