DICE Cancels PC Editions of Battlefield 1943 and Bad Company 2 'Onslaught' DLC to Focus on BF3
by Alice O'Connor, Feb 03, 2011 12:30pm PSTAfter a long and foreboding silence, DICE finally confirmed today that the PC edition of Battlefield 1943 has officially been cancelled. The PC version of Battlefield: Bad Company 2's 'Onslaught Mode' downloadable content has also been scrapped.
DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson made the announcement, speaking of his challenge "to balance work on the new against the already shipped, prioritizing the amount of energy spent on the known franchises and the time spent on developing something entirely new."
"While we'll continue supporting Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and previous games, it's time to look ahead to the next giant leap for DICE--the release of Battlefield 3," he wrote. "Our goal is crystal clear: we're going to build the best Battlefield game ever, and we'll do whatever it takes to make this the biggest launch in DICE's history."
Battlefield 1943 was released for download on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in July 2009. The PC edition was due to follow in September 2009 but was then delayed into the first quarter of 2010 to, in the words of producer Gordon Van Dyke, "ensure the features and functionality that PC players have come to expect from Battlefield on PC are not missing." In March 2010, it was promised "soon" but the game clearly missed that mark and neither DICE nor publisher EA has had much to say about it since.
BC2's Onslaught DLC was at least never officially confirmed for PC, saving PC gamers a little crushing disappointment, though today's announcement makes clear that it was planned. DICE had expressed concern about about how an optional DLC release would impact upon the dedicated server-driven environment of PC gaming. Onslaught launched for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in June 2010.
If it'll help raise your crushed hopes, though, Battlefield 3 lead designer David Goldfarb is stirring up talk of Battlefield 3 news tomorrow on Twitter. "Trend this shit. Tomorrow. #BF3," he wrote.
It's already known that BF3 will be on show at an event on March 1, during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Perhaps we'll be getting a little peek before then too.

I would love to play as Chinese, conquering the world - or Brazilian, kicking some Venezuelan butt - or European, kicking some Russian ass, etc...
Hopefully BF3 doesn't have the "arcade" feel that BF2 had, and really brings forward the epic battlefield, huge landscapes, and focused on teamwork and and strategy rather than run&gun, that you got with Project Reality and Combined Ops.
I've got high hopes, but the bar is set pretty high.

Oh, don't forget to leave out the Prone since you can't balance the game for it on consoles and thus PC gamers shouldn't have it either. Also, saddle us with a craptacular Main Menu UI that's fugly and Dedicated Servers that aren't really Dedicated Servers but money-making opportunities.
Cause that's worse canceling other stuff for.
The real translation is that they decided that the PC isn't worth supporting and just want to move on to getting BF3 ready for consoles....and then the PC.
And then the PC. Sigh.

Given the current trend of games, I'm not going to get my hopes up though.

There already is a teaser trailer on the official BF3 site:

Don't wait for my money, DICE. You're not getting it, ever.

"In our world-exclusive cover story, Game Informer unveils the first numbered entry in the Battlefield series since 2005. Many longtime fans are wondering, "what took so long?!" DICE has honed the concept for the true sequel for years, but it wasn't until the company developed the powerful new Frostbite 2 engine that it felt all the pieces were in place to create a proper follow-up. Armed with powerful upgrades like deferred rendering, real-time radiosity, a new animation system borrowed from the EA Sports label, and an exponential leap in destructibility, executive producer Patrick Bach dubs Frostbite 2 "the best piece of technology on the market when it comes to building games."
OMG! Sounds great.
ALSO, a teaser trailer will be released TOMORROW!!!
I'll buy BF3 when I play the demo. Thanks.
While I have fond memories of 1942 and Desert Combat, I still remember the spawn raping, the sporadic "no damage rocket hits", teamkillers at the plane spawn on the carriers.
BF2 was not that much better. The speed improved, but the weapons were even more consolized, and the flight dynamics were absolutely horrid (especially in the helicopter).
While infantry combat in BC2 seems to be better (although a lot of hits still don't register), the helicopter physics are still crap.
Doesn't anyone remember things like Quake 3 where you could nail people in the air with the railgun?
I don't have high hopes for this franchise anymore. It will still sell and still be made, but it won't be that fun. I mean look at Call of Duty...

If any of you have seen the pseudo console interface in BC2 as well as all the bugs, glitches, and hackers that are rampantly all over the place it should make sense to you too.
Not upset about this news at all.
I always thought they were wasting their time with way too many BF games.
First they announce BF Heroes. My reply: "where the f*ck is BF3!?"
Then BF 1943. My reply: "where the f*ck is BF3!?"
Then BC2. My reply: "where the f*ck is BF3!?" (though I do play BC2)
So, thank you DICE :)

And cancelling stuff some people were looking forward to is better than simply delaying the game and allowing more time for it to be worked on is a good idea because?

I can understand how it got canceled, and having never played it I don't know what I'm missing, but I would have LIKED to try it. Oh well, I guess I'll save my money for the next battlefield.
BFBC2 is still my favorite shooter right now, and after playing Black Ops and the new Killzone multiplayer demo (which was fine) I don't think that's going to change.

Besides, Battlefield 1942 has been done - I played that game to death. Out with the old, in with the new.
