Evening Reading
by Garnett Lee, Jan 25, 2011 5:00pm PSTOn Monday a bombing at Moscow's busiest airport took 35 lives and injured 110 more sending shockwaves through the international community. Listening to BBC World Services on the ride to work this morning I heard Russian President Dmitry Medvedev blasting security at the airport as "chaos" and blaming the tragedy on that.
But as proof I guess of how westernized Russia has become, the government financed Russia Today has pointed the finger at video games (seen on The New York Times). If you played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 you probably know where this is headed. In it, the infamous 'No Russian' level depicted terrorists walking through an airport terminal wantonly gunning down everyone in sight.
Forget the fact that it's fiction and the implication blaming this particular sort of fiction would create for the six seasons of 24 alone. The part that disturbs me the most is how these tragic, gut-wrenching events get sensationalized like this for the sake of generating news. It essentially turns the awful events into entertainment as if they were nothing more than the plot of a TV show, movie, or game. But they aren't. Real people lost their lives; real families were torn apart.
We're long past the grace period for pulling this sort of nonsense. Stop exploiting these situations to create news drama. Much as we might want to rationalize things and have them fit into our perceptions of what makes sense, the raw truth of it has to be faced. Bad people did bad things. And they didn't train with video games. They trained with real guns and bombs.
And now, highlights from today's video game news on the Shack:
Wargame: Airland Battle trailer details dynamic campaign
Halo 'Bootcamp' confirmed by Microsoft
Weekend PC download deals: Tomb Raider for $14
Game Dev Tycoon studio outlines future plans
Baldur's Gate 2 Enhanced already has 350,000 words of new content

My fiancee's family has an old LCD TV that's dying and they need to replace it. Their main concern is that they have several devices hooked up via Component and not HDMI, but all the TV's they've found online so far only offer HDMI connections. A brief search for Component->HDMI adapters yields nothing, is there something like that out there? Or does no one care about Component anymore? Any suggestions would be helpful, TIA.

Fortunately I turned my computer on before work and it's logged in by now so I can put it into offline mode at least.

i've written about this guy before. i won't re-iterate all the nonsense i've spewed before. but today, he was a whole new level of frustrating.
supremely busy day. lots of things going on. two meetings. deadlines for this week. and unlike a lot of university or public sector culture, we try to take deadlines seriously.
anyway he finds out he can't navigate to a university of indiana website. this freaks him out. apparently there's some intra-university network that is maintained to allow different colleges access to one another with high throughput. he fucking fixates on this one issue and drops all other projects for the day. he even interrupts our network team's private weekly meeting to show them a tracert log with specific timeouts highlighted, wondering "what could cause this?" he interrupeted our team meeting to bring up this fucking insignificant problem.
this is his typical modus operandi! he finds a trivial but mystical problem to distract himself from daily tasks, and becomes enamored with it. if you question his dediciation to such a minor issue, he says you don't care about troubleshooting. if you suggest he spend his time on something more immediate, he claims you're pressuring him to work fast and sloppy. jesus christ.

What's a good Apple mouse? Any opinions on the 'Magic Mouse'? Considering getting something for my Dad to pair with his MBA. Doing heavy Excel work with just the touchpad is painful.

So I just finished watching all three seasons of Arrested Development on Netflix and now I am sad because now I have nothing even close as good to watch on TV! Any recommendations?
So many great moments.

Such a nice little game but some utter fuck whore design to it!
The checkpoints are badly done, toward the late game you're just rushing to get to one because you've just surved a 6 minute battle (the 3'rd time) so you hit the checkpoint - with 12 enemies left. Problem is you can't "re-check" on the point - so each time you spawn there's 12 enemies. You have to weigh up, do I risk losing those 6 minutes again and again to try to get a 'cleaner' checkpoint? Each wave of enemies rolls into the next checkpoint sadly.
Silly stuff, I'm facing demons from another portal now, on an area full of platforms and the fucks are just pushing me off the edge frequently - again it's 5 minutes just to get to the point where the shitstains push me.
Otherwise, it's a great little game, I guess I shouldn't expect it to be simple if I want value for money but I think I already got my 10$
BTW I got the staff of war and that is definitely the one to keep, doubles your hit points, utterly mandatory. Also the jokes and humour are great
Such as
your robe and wizard hat
khaaaaaaaaan
300 "madness" scene
kings quest references
highlander references
I can't recall them all but I frequently laughed out loud - possibly more than any other game in a while.

http://chinageeks.org/2011/01/little-rabbit-be-good-a-subversive-new-years-video-card/
It's an animated political cartoon which calls, quite literally, for violent revolution against the chinese government. The thing is, the studio that made it is located in Beijing!!
This is a pretty significant development in chinese media/political activism. Even Liu Xiaobo, the Nobel Peace Price winner, who was recently imprisoned for 11 years, wasn't nearly as subversive as this.
