I think there's basically an infinite amount of creative room in shooter design if a game wants to be a mega-hit, it's just way too risky. My most anticipated games of 2011 are Brink and Deus Ex 3, because they have the potential to be something very unique and amazing. They also scare me because there's a really good chance in my mind they might suck horribly. Compare that to say...Rage...which I'm very confident is going to be a really good, polished game...but probably not a truly great one.
I also think it's a similar argument to the one you guys just had about WoW and its competition.
