Evening Reading
by Jeff Mattas, Jan 13, 2011 5:00pm PSTI'm not exactly sure what triggered the impulse, but I've been revisiting the show 'Sifl and Olly' recently on ye ol' YouTubes.
For the uninitiated, 'Sifl and Olly' was a short-lived comedy show created by musicians Liam Lynch and Matt Crocco that aired on late-night MTV from 1997-'99. It bears the distinction of being one of the most-beloved pieces of original comedy programming the network ever aired, while also being one of the lowest-rated. Sadly, despite fan requests, it's unclear if series will ever see a re-release that isn't so rare that it immediately becomes ridiculously expensive.
On that note, have a crescentfresh chatty.

I've created an tiny app in Eclipse. It compiles error free. Eclipse tells me it installed okay, however I cannot see or run the application on the simulator. On my other computer, normally the app would install and then immediately load up on the simulator. Any ideas?

In December we (ShackTac) invited you all to come over for a vanilla Arrowhead session, with positive results and some fun gameplay. It was a good time, but I was disappointed by the "vanilla" gameplay compared to what we typically have in our modified sessions, and felt that the overall experience left something to be desired due to that. I'd like to play another joint event with the new Shacknews crop of players, but I'd also like to not revisit vanilla Arrowhead to do so - hence this interest check.
In short, we use a program called Yoma's Addonsync to manage our modset. It is a very straightforward program to use (one which we'd have step-by-step instructions for), and permits easy distribution of custom modsets. I would like to know how many of you would be interested in a ShackTac-hosted Sunday even sometime in the coming weeks that would:
1) Be based off of the 'combined arms' setup of ArmA2 + Operation Arrowhead
2) Use our modset, which includes the Advanced Combat Environment mod and a bunch of misc stuff plus a ton of community-created terrains (totals about 7.7GB of stuff to download, but it's automagically easy via the Addonsync tool)
3) Involve us playing the more typical ShackTac-style missions, both cooperative and adversarial
So, who would be game for this? It's easy for us to set it up, pass out instructions, etc, and we'd be happy to help anyone get up to speed with the addons, the addon tool, etc.
Also, does the 1-2pm Sunday central timeslot work for reasonably well for everyone?
For anyone curious, this is a pretty solid example of what our typical sessions consist of:

Ignore the headline, and concentrate on this quote from Michael Pachter:
"Activision was intentionally opaque about who was working on next year's game, and specifically refused to acknowledge whether the next game was being made by Infinity Ward or Sledgehammer when I asked them directly about it.
"So it is not safe to assume it's going to be an Infinity Ward game [that launches November 2011]. The only safe assumption is that there will be a Call of Duty game in 2011."
Not the most outlandish Pachterian forecast; seems in line with present expectations. Rumor has it they're sticking with IW4 for whatever's coming in 2011.

F.L.C.L (Fooly Cooly): Have you seen it, did you like it, was it amazing and insightful or just downright annoying?
For those of you unfamiliar with FLCL, just watch this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3b0A_KjihY
Behind all the giant robots growing out of the head of a boy run over by a vespa riding alien girl who fight's with a bass guitar, constantly switching animation styles and loud jrock soundtrack by The Pillows, it's really sort of an amazing coming of age story set in a small town with a giant factory that looks like an iron.
The entire show (only about 3 hours long) makes very little sense the first time through but it's immensely enjoyable. I'm not sure why, but I absolutely love it. it ends up feeling like a really great story told through what almost becomes a spoof of the whole anime genre and all it's associated craziness.

Quick scenario. Small office outgrows WRT54G2 by requiring a total of 8 ports. Office has had all network cable wired throughout to meet at storage closet where current WRT54G2 sits alongside DSL modem.
Quickest, cheapest way to add those additional ports is to just throw a 8-port switch between network cables and WRT54G2? Correct?

What is the earliest memory that you have? Mine is of visiting my newly born sister in the hospital; I was almost 3 at the time. The memory has sort of become somewhat surreal over the years and it probably isn't very accurate anymore.
I also have other memories of around that age, but I'm unable to date them.

I'm looking for a new nonfiction book to read. Ideally your picks are available in e-format, as I like to read on my iPad. As far as subject matter: I'm not picky, but I prefer nonfiction narratives that read like fiction. Take Masters of Doom for example. Even readers who didn't know anything about id Software or "the Two Johns" before reading the book found it easy to read because the narrative is engaging and accessible.

He has an Iphone 3g, and accidentally updated the software to the latest version because he is a fucking idiot. Which he claims is version 5.15.04.
Anyway does anyone know if there is currently a way to jailbreak and unlock the phone now? I understand it probably means installing a previous version of the OS and probably downgrading the baseband or whatever its called, i just wondered if this was actually possible right now (if so, how?) or whether he has to wait it out for a fix to become available.
Thanks shack, i owe you one.

I'm making a freakin Excel spreadsheet just to keep track of where everything stores its stuff, as well as keep track of all the different logins to different services.
For instance, I discovered that Splinter Cell Conviction keeps all save data in the cloud, and none locally. I also remembered my uplay account info and have upoints to spend on Settlers 7 when I install that. Yay.
Dirt 2 on the other hand keeps save data in 3 separate folders, tightly locked down to your GFWL login. Forget to back up all three and your saves are kaput.
And Titan Quest is the worst, as loot stored at the loot storage guy doesnt get transferred in a save, something to do with computer and windows user name or somesuch. :(
Someone needs to make an app that knows where games keep their saves and can keep this crap backed up and up to date. That or everything needs to go 100% cloud. Which is only as good as long as the servers are up.

for Apple. "I'll tell you a story I probably shouldn't tell you," he
told Eurogamer. "I downloaded Smurf's Village for free on the iPad for
my kids, who are four and two, because I wanted to get them used to
playing games. And the first thing they did was bought a Wagon of
Smurf for £59.99.
"There's no password protection," he added. "I think Apple might just
warn people who are downloading a game for a four-year-old that it
includes in-app purchases without password protection."
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-01-14-mps-show-support-for-gaming
There is passwd protection, but the ipad caches it for 15 minutes. So parents enter their passwd to install a free game, hand the ipad to the kids, kid immediately does two taps to buy some dumb trinket, parent is billed $99.
I shall turn off in-app purchases!

Just got done with two submissions for an art exhibition. They're due by today... and I, of course, waited until 4am this morning to decide which ones I'm entering. I then had to take photos of them displayed (shooting photos of photos is silly). I really wish I could enter three of them... I'll just have to save one for next year.
I'll post the photos if I get accepted. I don't wanna jinx myself. I've been pretty lucky getting things accepted, but this is a mixed media type thinger, so I'm going up against photographers, sculptors, painters and videographers
Wish me luck... I need to sell some of this shit so I can pay for all this camera crap.
Sincerely
-Drucifer Arbus

Pretty good movie right? Of all the complaints I could make, I think there is really just one that I don't see much discussion about:
Why would you possibly need to send a human crew? At all??? It seems so unnecessary, doesn't it?
