Evening Reading
by Brian Leahy, Dec 30, 2010 5:00pm PSTThis post, like the one I'll be posting tomorrow night at your regular chatty time is little more than a comments reset to make sure things stay fresh and smooth over the New Years break.
Over break, I hope to hit level 80 in World of Warcraft so I can actually start digging into the high-level Cataclysm content. I'm about to hit 78 and I've been doing mostly quest marathons mixed in with some random dungeons. Queuing as a healer makes that go by so quickly.
Talk amongst yourselves.

I have an i7 and a 24" monitor.
Can get a 6870 for $220 but I know it's slower. 6950 for $300 and flash to 6970? is it 50% faster than the 5870?
How important is Tessellation going to be for the next, say 2 years of games. Will this generation's consoles hold things back?
I gotta go to bed, but curious if anyone has thoughts (will check back in the morning)...
Thanks!

The only reason I "regret" the stagnation is because it further increases public ignorance of tech. An example would be that since graphics literally can't go much higher than what a console game has, the console and PC become equal in hardware in the common folks mind. Though anyone with knowledge of computers knows this is not the case.
Short version: I hate console kiddies who tell me their l33t graphics are better than a gamer computers because the technology holds the PC's power back.
I too agree with your sentiment that the stagnation has increased developer art direction, which is always something to be happy about.
All in all I think that the consoles have actually helped PC gaming and gaming in general from a development side. No longer is there a high set bar for graphics. The playing field is equal, and now games must have more gameplay than "LOLOLOL pretty graphix".
