The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Will Utilize a New Engine; Coming to PC, Xbox 360 and PS3
by Xav de Matos, Dec 13, 2010 9:00am PSTSaturday's announcement of a new title in the Elder Scrolls series left us with a few questions, today the picture of the fifth game in the franchise is a little clearer.
According to Bethesda's official Twitter account, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will not utilize the same engine that helped power Oblivion and Fallout 3. "Seeing lots of speculation about [the Elder Scrolls V] game engine. It's brand new... and it's spectacular!" a Bethesda Blog tweet revealed.
Based on the trailer, it would appear that that an evil power--presumably a dragon race--has reappeared in the world after years of being considered a forgotten legend.
"You should have acted," a voice in the trailer pleads. "They're already here. The Elder Scrolls told of their return. Their defeat was merely a delay. From the time after Oblivion opened, when the sons of Skyrim would spill their own blood." The trailer goes on to name the legendary hero that strike fear into the heart of the returning evil: Dovahkiin.
More details for the game will arrive soon, as Skyrim will be the featured cover story in the February issue of Game Informer.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will launch on November 11, 2011, for the PC, Xbox 360 and, PlayStation 3.

Also if you don't trust my beta and the word on the street, they basically already official said it is RAGE http://twitter.com/Bethblog/status/14010984884604929#
** Note - That background is from RAGE engine. Hmm what more do you need. **
They really could not use anything else if you logically deduce it with out the facts already put out on the table. You have to consider first the Xbox 360 and the PS3, then the PC last(sorry crew I know it sucks). The engine can not support DX 10 or DX11 for you need a core engine scalable but is bound to the two lower denominators.
So DX9 is the target hmmm what kick ass state of the art engine run pimp on the PC, Xbox 360 and the PS3 and is now under the umbrella of Bethesda.
Hmmm this is really a tough one to figure out.... no actually its piss easy its RAGE and Elder Scrolls V is gona be freeaking EPIC! in the RAGE engine.
Maaa maaaaaa maaaaa mmaaaaaa!

Jesus people, it's not idtech5.
My guess is, Rage's open environments are only open in the same way Borderlands is open. And they'll be mostly static in a similar way too.
Morrowind, Oblivion, and Fallout3 demand a seemless, more dynamic open-world engine which idtech5 probably doesn't offer. I'd have to guess Skyrim will use something very similar in structure to what Fallout3 used, but updated in many ways.
Engines aren't purely about graphics and when you understand that you could easily see why they'd choose not to use idtech5.
