Popular Science Names PlayStation Move, OnLive and iPad 'Best of What's New' in 2010
by Xav de Matos, Nov 23, 2010 3:00pm PSTIn its annual "Best of What's New 2010" awards, Popular Science gave the nod to three game-related devices: Sony's PlayStation Move, the OnLive service, and Apple's iPad.
The PlayStation Move was named the "Most Immersive Game Controller" in the 100-product long guide for 2010, which is featured in the December issue of the Popular Science magazine. According to the guide, "Sony's Move is the first motion-capture game system accurate enough to attract the hardcore gamers who consider the Wii and Microsoft Kinect to be kids' stuff."
The OnLive streaming video game service was given the title of "Gaming for Everyone," noting that the only thing that stands between players and "graphics-heavy" gaming is an Internet connection. "No high-end rigs or pricey graphics cards are necessary: OnLive's servers do the work." Both Move and OnLive were listed in the home entertainment category.
Finally, Apple's iPad was named the "Top Tablet," taking top honors in the gadget category. "Apple made what everyone wanted: a sleek device with a gorgeous screen and a dead- simple interface that makes you want to sit back and play," the listing says. So, how did apple break the puzzle of making the "top tablet"? "Rather than shrink a computer, enlarge a phone." Just don't try holding it to your head in public.
Last year, Popular Science awarded Microsoft's Kinect--still "Project Natal" at the time--top honors in the home entertainment category.
