Evening Reading

By Brian Leahy, Nov 22, 2010 5:00pm PST It's a holiday week here in the United States as we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving with copious amounts of eating, football watching, and gaming. It will be interesting to see if Rock Band 3 or Kinect wins out with the group coming over to my place to the feast. I'm guessing Kinect will start up first so people that haven't seen it can check it out, but then we'll transition to Rock Band as per usual.

Meanwhile, I'm off to record this Friday's podcast early and will be out Wednesday through Friday. Be nice to those left on duty. Oh, and due to some technical difficulties, Xav's comparison of 2D vs. 3D in CoD: Black Ops multiplayer will hit tomorrow.

Made the bread on Saturday. A pretty standard french bread style recipe. Double rise. Nothing fancy. Preheated the dutch oven at about 450F or so, and then once the bread was done rising, i put the bread in the hot dutch oven. Baked it with the lid on for a while, then took it off to let the top brown.

Turned out awesome. Definitely recommend it. I'll be doing future loaves this way.

To go with the bread, we made some fresh butter from cream. I've never done that before. It was really easy with the whisk attachment of a kitchenaid. basically just let it go until you have butter. One point is to make sure you're watching it pretty carefully. I just let it go on high, and got distracted in the other room. i heard the whir of the motor change slightly. By the time i got back, i had a lump of butter on the whisk, and buttermilk was spraying everywhere. It was awesome.

So yeah. good way to make bread, if you haven't tried it. Also, try making your own butter sometime. It's fun and easy!
