  • I have a question/discussion point for the whole WC community: I've been having a feeling lately that we (as a gaming industry) have reached the limits of what can be done in terms of both storytelling and interaction.

    First interaction: It struck me while playing Cod Blops that what I was doing in the game was, aside from obvious technical advancements, was the same stuff I was doing back in the early 90's playing Duke Nukem and Doom; simply running in a straight line and shooting things in the face. This got me thinking outside the clichéd shooter argument and onto other genres and started to think outside the box. It was then that I realized that player-character interaction has not advanced since the beginning of the 3D era. All games involve either killing things, solving arbitrary puzzles, or wandering around in an area that someone else has constructed. I like to call the current state of gaming to be little more than audio-visual masturbation that just taps into our primary instincts of instant gratification.

    I am aware that games like Heavy Rain attempt to do something different, but a knee-jerk reaction from many gamers felt the game to be nothing more than a bunch of QTE's and seem to ignore any advancements in the storytelling.

    So I guess my questions for the community are: 1) Do we even NEED drastic changes in the way we interact with games or is simply refining on pre-established genres enough? 2) What can developers do to innovate on what and how we interact with games? and 3) Should we stop calling them "games"?

    I just realized that I set myself up for also talking about storytelling, however I can't be bothered right now. Too tired. :)
