Electronic Arts Purchases Indie Mobile Publisher Chillingo
by Xav de Matos, Oct 20, 2010 3:40pm PDTEA has added another weapon to its mobile games arsenal today as the game industry giant has purchased independent UK publisher Chillingo, EA confirmed to Reuters.
According to the report, Chillingo--which published hits like Cut the Rope and co-published Angry Birds--was purchased for the rockbottom price of $20 million, a mere sneeze in the direction of the initial $300 million (plus performance incentives) deal Electronic Arts put into place to acquire PlayFish. EA would not confirm the purchase price.
This deal continues the streak of high quality independent mobile teams being gobbled up by bigger fish. Last week, a Japanese mobile company DeNA revealed plans to purchase developer ngmoco, while both Disney and Google have reportedly cracked full wallets in order to invest in mobile game talent.
