Shack PSA: Pre-Load Civilization 5 Now

By Brian Leahy, Sep 13, 2010 4:12pm PDT Just a heads-up that pre-order customers for Civilization V on Steam can start pre-loading the game ahead of the title's September 21 release date.

I recently went hands-on with the game's multiplayer and Garnett has offline impressions from August.

Standard ($50) and Digital Deluxe ($60) editions are available to pre-order and a demo should be released on the same day as the full game. Retail versions will require Steam as the game utilizes Steamworks.

2K Games has also streamed and archived around 2 hours of playtime in the game, which can be viewed here .

  • Just preordered it on Steam.
Yesterday my boss asked me about Civ 5. He's about 35, and not that into games. All he knows is that I'm a PC gamer, which to him just means World of Warcraft (even though I don't touch that). Here's how the conversation went:

"You heard of Civilization? I hear they're making a new game."
"Yeah, I'm definitely getting it at launch."
"Isnt that basically just like a role playing game? Like World of Warcraft?"
"Mmmmm no, nothing like that really. It's a turn-based strategy game. It's sort of like a big expansive board game ... like Catan- errr Risk (had to dumb it down) with resources and cultural achievements and stuff."
"That sounds like World of Warcraft to me."
"No... WoW is more like: 'I'm a mage and I'm wearing gloves of the gorilla and I'm going to cast blizzard on elves for 500 damage points."

He just shook his head and went back to work. I'm not sure my explanation made sense...

**Walter remembers that his boss is convinced he's "a PC gamer, which to him just means World of Warcraft. As the flashback ends, he blinks and considers**

"Civilization is just like World of Warcraft. In fact, it IS World of Warcraft. You have exposed the horrible secret of PC gaming. Every PC game ever released is in fact World of Warcraft, released with different names. What they are calling Civilization is in fact World of Warcraft repackaged to lure in minors. Remember D&D and how it devoured the souls of children who went needlessly into the danger of playing D&D? WoW is the digital soul eater, but some have figured out that it consumes the immortal soul of those who have ever installed a 10 day trial! So now they've begun selling it under new names, names you wouldn't expect. Like Just Cause 2, Civilization, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Medal of Honor, Portal 2, and Toy Story 3. Beware PC gaming! Even reading about it endangers your soul!"
      "I knew it!"
"You were wise to come to me and ask. Go to your church and pray, pray as hard as you can for all our sakes! Think of all the children who will grow up soul-less!"
"Omg, that's how Obama was elected!"
"Yes. That's right. All the Soul Less are registered democrats. They are leading us into a soulfree world!"
"Glenn Beck said it'd be like this! I have to go get a, 'Don't Tread on Me' icon stenciled onto my car!"
"Go, go! Keep yourself safe! Don't install games on your PC, any of them could be WoW in disguise! Better if you just stay away from computers altogether!"
"I will! I will!" **Boss runs out of the office screaming.**

**Walter shakes his head and resumes working. The next day, when his boss does not return, he is promoted to his boss's position. Months later, he hears a story about how a man was arrested for disturbing the peace at City Hall, papering the building with pamphlets that say, 'WoW wants your soul! Down with PC's!'"**
