Red 5 Announces Persistent, Online Team-Based Shooter 'Firefall'
by Brian Leahy, Sep 07, 2010 12:50pm PDTRed 5 Studios have announced Firefall, a "team-based action shooter" with persistent elements. The studio has also released new screenshots and two trailers, featuring both gameplay and cinematics.
The game looks like a cross-between Tribes and Borderlands and the gameplay looks solid. Beta sign-ups are now open at the game's official website, as well.
Here's the gameplay demonstration, featuring jetpacks, first- and third-person play, vehicles, and a lot of gunplay.
The cinematic trailer can be viewed below.
The game is scheduled for release in 2011 on the PC.

Comments
The Cinematic was great - though it looks like the team pretty much gets completely wiped out (on 1 Thumper :P)
The gameplay looks like it might be something 'new' and yet still fun - looking forward to more on this.

I mean hell, you gave us a COMPLETELY UNCUT GAMEPLAY VIDEO. OMFG. That is unheard of nowadays. I am almost tempted to buy the game simply for THAT alone.

I'm fine with microtransactions if they're done right. I think they're dumb the way most companies do them, but if they're REALLY optional then I think it's cool.
I haven't played it, but friends tell me League of Legends is free to play and just makes their heroes random. Then you can pay a small fee for each one you want unlocked all the time. I think this is fine because in that particular game type you're not going to want to use every hero anyway. There may be some other thing I hate or some drawback I'm not aware of, but if done right I think it's fine.
Microtransactions don't HAVE to mean the game becomes stupid. I mean...as long as you're not paying for boosts to stats/gear/levels/etc and the stuff's mostly cosmetic, that's probably OK.

I don't know why this is labeled Tribes though, the only thing in it that looks Tribesy is the jet packs, which are huge and clunky. Maybe Tribes:Vengeance, but that wasn't Tribes at all, rather UT with jetpacks.

I loved it when good games were noticed, now people care about things like Halo Reach ... which is awful.
