XCOM Trailer Shows Off FPS 'Re-Imagining'
by Chris Faylor, Jun 11, 2010 9:40am PDTThe very first trailer for XCOM--the "re-imagining" of the strategy series as a "mystery-filled first-person shooter" by developer 2K Marin--has arrived, just in time for E3 2010.
Coming to PC and Xbox 360, XCOM is slated to arrive in 2011.

Not turn based, and if they consider this "real time" then they can go screw themselves.
Looks like Ill stick to playing X-com APOC again until they take a X-com reboot seriously. This game will do horrible review wise, and sales wise. None of the real X-com players will buy this, and no one will see this trailer and actually think, Cool I want to shoot black blobs all the time.

I digress: Ok, so they have this pretty ok looking game and idea, but they're like "Fudge! no one's going to give a crap about this! We gotta do something..." and this guy - we'll call him Bob for now - is like "I miss X-COM." and this other guy who was talking at first - we'll call him Fred - is like "THAT'S IT! We have this X-COM name, these things are 'extraterrestrial', we'll just slap X-COM on there!" and Bob was like "But this shit is nothing like X-COM! Screw you!" and then the CEO fires Bob, but Fred's like "Wait! That's how all the fans of the X-COM name are going to react! And they'll voice their opinions on the webberblags! And all the people who didn't know about X-COM are going to be interested because obviously we're in the wrong for using the name like this. So people will argue about this constantly because some will say something like 'Games is art' and 'Trolling is a art'. Some will be interested to know, and will probably buy the old games to see. But they'll argue. And people will remember the game as long as they argue!"
They're using us guys. THEY KNOW WHAT WE'RE THINKING! THEY'RE IN OUR HEADS! THEY KNOW HOW TO TURN US AGAINST OURSELVES AND USE US! WERE'S MY TINFOIL HAT!!!

I mean think about it, this IP was as good as dead, and any hardcore XCOM fan looking for a new iteration of the tactical squad/micromanagement concept knows well beforehand this is not it by virtue of being advertised as an FPS, right there, from the beginning. As for newcomers, they don't even know what the fuck XCOM is.
This should be analyzed on its own virtues, how good an FPS is, how well it meshes with the design elements and canon of the previous titles (given the setting, I suppose this is one of many invasions leading to XCOM's creation in 1998), etc.
Sure, you can be bitter about XCOM not having a new turn-based installment, but that doesn't mean "it didn't happen because of this". This is not some developer shitting on your precious baby, they're going to be working on this for months and months, pouring countless man-hours and effort into it. Trust me, they must love a decade-old franchise if they plan on working on it. Doesn't mean you can take for granted a good game will come out of this, but it's just something else, something new. A sidedish, if you will. You may even be surprised. They're certainly trying to. This is hardly a megalomaniac publisher shoving some highly popular intellectual property to a no-name churn house.
I could understand having a suspicious outlook on heavy IP milking, with multiple sequels and offshoots spanning several development studios in a relatively short timeframe; yet no one's tugging your nostalgia strings here. Half of you never played XCOM and the other half is well aware this is not the same thing. "Cash-in" doesn't work when the franchise has been defunct for as long as this has. At most this is a reimagining that may or may not float your boat.
The key lies knowing which battles to pick; that's game design 101. I'm sure you can make a fantastically addictive music-based game based in Thief's setting where you shoot well-timed elemental arrows or something equally absurd, but the minute you try to make this not tongue-in-cheek, you've automatically lost. Maybe it completely misses the point of Thief, but we're talking about settings, events...canon, here, if you will. And while you can sperg on how these additions completely "ruin" the series, it's probably your fault for considering it part of the series anyway.
I mean, you don't see me taking 95% percent of Deus Ex 2 seriously.

50's setting is terrible
Alien design is terrible
Gameplay so far looks terrible.
Fallout 3 imo,
successfully took a turn-based game, and turned it into a successful FPS.
I'm hoping this pulls that off somehow. But so far... I'm not impressed, and I wish they wouldn't tarnish the already tarnished XCOM brand name.

That being said, I am willing to give it a try, provided they somehow include some deeper gameplay elements.
And for the love of framerates, please optimize the engine more! Bioshock 2 was a slow train to frustrationville, even on a high-end system.

1. X-com took place in the late 90's, not the 50's. Is this Destroy All Humans, or X-com?
2. X-Com were tactical strategy games, this is clearly not.
3. X-Com's aliens had a distinctive look. They were called Sectoids. They weren't black oil from X-Files.
Create your own IP! Stop being lazy and trying to cash in on a name. People who played X-Com played it because they liked what it was, not because they really wished it could be another mindless shoot-em-up game... If your game can't be successful by standing on its own feet, then you shouldn't waste time making it, hoping to fool people into buying it because it's named after a successful franchise that people loved.

That being said, this could either be a good FPS or a bad FPS, and it is still a bit hard to tell from this gameplay trailer which this game will turn out to be. I am kind of hoping it is an open-world environment, since I think it would be cool to explore a 1950's setting.

Geth stalkers, Headcrabs, Crawlers from killing floor that nibble my ankles to death, Jockey's, those dude's from FEAR that crawled around, etc. etc. etc. - I just can't stand them.

I think using the name XCOM dredged up a lot of people's memories about a game type that still has yet to be successfully emulated (Rainbow Six was probably the only one that got remotely close.) Then disappointment set in when we all saw how this was another IP shoe-horned into the same mass-appeal mold.
There's business at work here. Games are increasingly expensive to make, and niche play styles risk disappointing sales. I'm not sure if by "disappointing" it's taken to mean "did not make back development costs", or "it didn't make billions like MW2".
It's possible that a true-to-original XCOM remake would have worked. But I get the impression that it's still seen as too risky for most. Everyone wants to make the next WoW or MW2, or at least a broad-appeal game. Until that model starts to die out (which is not likely so long as sales figures continue the way they do) then I think we'll be enduring this for some time to come.

I mean with an fantastic, popular IP like that, it really would be the best idea to make a game for everyone! My uncle liked Wii bowling soo much, that would be the ideal game for "UFO"!

1) Color filter. I was ready to see a redheaded clown with sunglasses make a pithy comment, followed by "YEAHHHHHHHH!"
2) Destroy All Humans.
3) Black oil from X-Files, or is it from....BP?!
4) Scanners! Lightning Guns! Who ya gonna call?
5) Monster megalith... "My God..." "No... Not your God... this one is mine! LEVIATHAN! LORD OF THE LABYRINTH!"
I think that's all, but that's enough.
