Valve Delays Portal 2, Confirms E3 Surprise Is 'PORTAL-2-THEMED-FOR-GOD'S SAKE'
by Chris Faylor, Jun 09, 2010 9:26am PDTOriginally planned to arrive "this coming holiday season," Valve Software's clever puzzle-shooter sequel Portal 2--in development for PC, Mac and Xbox 360-- has been pushed back to a nebulous "2011 release" target.
Word of the delay arrived in a joint press release from Valve and in-game research firm Aperture Science, simply titled "VALVE ANNOUNCES MAKING GAMES IS HARD."
"Even though Portal 2 will arrive slightly later than planned, all life on earth won't instantaneously stop as every molecule in your body explodes at the speed of light, which is what would happen should a rip ever appear in the fabric of Valve Time," they declared, acknowledging the well-known phenomenon of Valve missing release targets.
The company also wrote that its previously teased E3 2010 "surprise" is "PORTAL-2-THEMED-FOR-GOD'S SAKE," dashing hopes of Half-Life 2: Episode Three.
VALVE ANNOUNCES MAKING GAMES IS HARDJune 9, 2010 -- Aperture Science, doing business as Aperture Laboratories LLC, in partnership with Valve today announced the successful completion of an ethics-review-panel-supervised release date restructuring process. Portal 2, the sequel to the ground-breaking title that earned over 30 Game of the Year awards despite missing its original ship date, is now targeted for a 2011 release.
Representatives from both companies acknowledged that public safety concerns factored into the decision. They went on to say that even though Portal 2 will arrive slightly later than planned, all life on earth won't instantaneously stop as every molecule in your body explodes at the speed of light, which is what would happen should a rip ever appear in the fabric of Valve Time.
"Also, the game will be even better," they added, missing an historic opportunity to create the first product delay press release to mention that a product is being delayed to make it worse.
To ask questions about how close we all came to dying, or to ask futile questions about the previously announced E3 ***PORTAL-2-THEMED-FOR-GOD'S SAKE*** surprise or, less futilely, to schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's delegate to the EU's Valve Time Studies Group, Doug Lombardi.

The morons always try to act like they know what they're doing better than the professionals.

Does Valve pay you people to call those of us who are pissed "entitled", or "bitter" or whatever other negative term you want to use? Seriously is there a Valve Defense Force that pays you to try and shout down rightly annoyed/angered fans? We can't be pissed off about waiting 6 years for a sequel? 3 years for a supposed "episode"? without as much as a screen shot?
People are not saying they fucking hate Half Life and the series is shit, they're saying they're pissed because Valve can't show a God damn thing of a series they love. Understand the difference and please shut the fuck up! Unless of course they are paying you, then you at least have a legit reason.

Put it down to these devs being divine entities that can do no wrong if you wish but your reactions are completely overblown, much like those you profess to be entitled and butthurt.
I don't see what the big fucking deal is. Why do people put so much stock in release dates? I love games as much as anyone out there and they take up a large chunk of my time but release dates and 'surprises' and 'OMG WE MUST HAVE A SEQUEL NAO' has neer been an issue for me. If it comes out, it comes out, if it doesn't, it doesn't. Get the fuck over it and grow up.

Valve is very good at controlled-environment games. And they're fun. But I'd like to see them create an open world to explore. I have the feeling that if Valve created an MMO they would make billions.

Oh come on, I think there's been at least two developers in the last 15 years who have announced a delay to make a game worse. Just not intentionally.

I guess it helps that I wasn't aware of their time-line regarding this game. On purpose. Because it's Valve.

Personally, I hope it's going to be a completely new game being revealed. That or a new engine, or both. Let's just hope the L4D team doesn't have anything to do with it. They have shown their incompetency with their performance with L4D1 which has been a complete joke at best in terms of community interactions and post-launch support.
