The fourth instalment of Volition's Red Faction franchise will be named Red Faction: Armageddon and see the smash-happy shooter series returning underground, publisher THQ has announced.

Set fifty years after the events of Red Faction: Guerrilla, Armageddon will see the plucky Martian colonists returning to the tunnels that played host to the first two Red Faction games, only to discover that there is indeed life on Mars--and it's none too friendly.

As well as smashing things down--courtesy of the Geo-Mod 2.0 engine again--Armageddon will let players reconstruct structures using the 'Nano Forge' gizmo, which also offers other abilities including a "Magnet Gun."

Red Faction: Armageddon is slated to hit PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in March 2011.

guerilla was so much fun, the walkers and the destruction that you caused with them could be played over and over again.

Amen, brother. I am re-playing it as we speak/type, and I must say, blowing shit up and watching it fall down has to be the most gratifying thing since placing photon cannons in Starcraft. I am also dating myself.

I think the level of destruction from RFG and the sheer freedom that gave you in approaching missions should be standard in all action games from now on. It's just a logical step towards realism. After I completed RFG, I encountered that classic disappointment I always get when I go from a massively innovative game to a game that hasn't gotten with the times yet, which sadly was pretty much all other games at the time. At least now we have Bad Company 2 which brings almost the same level of destruction to the table (that game is also amazing).
