Valve Teases Surprise at E3; Cancels Portal 2 Event
by Brian Leahy, Jun 01, 2010 1:48pm PDTValve, ever the trickster, has sent an e-mail out to members of the press from Aperture Science declaring the cancellation of the previously scheduled Portal 2 E3 presentation, which is to take place on Monday, June 14.
Within the email, written entirely in "character" from Aperture Science, is the promise of a surprise. Whether this surprise has something to do with Portal 2 or something else is anyone's guess.
My guess: Half-Life 2: Episode 3, which will crossover with Portal 2. The full email, which is hilarious, can be found here:
Dear Subject Name Here,
Aperture Science is pleased to inform you that we have partnered with Valve to announce the gala CANCELLATION of the June 14 Portal 2 event at the Regal Theater. The event will be replaced by a surprise. And even though the cancellation of the event certainly counts as a surprise, we are pleased to further announce that the cancellation of the event is not THE surprise. However, per International treaties regarding the definition of the word "surprise", of which both Aperture Science and Valve are signatories, the time, date and content of the actual surprise will only become available as you experience the surprise.
If you'd like to ask fruitless questions about the E3 Portal 2 surprise or, more fruitfully, schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's Special Envoy to Surprises, Doug Lombardi.
Thank you for **RECORD SCRATCH!!!**
PS: The surprising record scratch is also not the surprise.

I think it's safe to say that we'll be seeing more of Half-life at E3.
NO MOVIES! Uwe Boll ruined my excitement of game stories developed into movies. "Doom" comes to mind first and foremost. Peter Jackson, maybe but still, I am jaded. I'd be very happy with a book or series of books.
Not a hater, not a troll, not even complaining about the E3 announcment. I'm just frustrated and want a great book (Novel or trilogy) if the pace stays as it is with HL.

Portal's short, understated nature was what made it amazing. I'm hoping they can keep that feeling going despite expectations being really high.

In recent interviews valve said they would love to make a game for the Wii...
I predict that they will do something with other consoles...
6 years between Half Life and Half Life 2, its been 6 years now since Half Life 2.
2 expansion packs were issued for Half Life, 2 episodes were issued for HL2, and Valve has already stated the episodes system did not work as planned, and other than Telltale it seems episodes in general are dead.
The cliffhanger at the end of Ep2 is a perfect set-up for the 3rd Half Life.

Valve is also porting Steam to Linux, Unix, DOS (6.0+ only), Android (2.1+ only), Google ChromeOS, PalmOS, BeOS, OS/2, Commodore64, NES, the Operating System of the ED-209 series robotic peacekeeper, and Skynet. Release date: August 29, 2012.

Plus the whole email format just suggests more Portalish mindfuckerry. Wasn't there some sort of message at GDC about ARG being suspended until E3? So yeah, it is most likely going to be continuation of that... and not Episode 3. Oh well..

Some HL-style rock music kicks in and you hear a motherfucking crowbar thwack the shit out of zombies left and right and Gordon Freeman whips out his gravity gun to toss the undead to and fro.
Actually, I'll settle for EP3. Enough fucking zombies.
