Morning Discussion: Holiday Edition
by Alice O'Connor, May 31, 2010 5:00am PDTToday is a holiday in both the USA and the UK--Spring Bank Holiday in the UK and Memorial Day in the USA--so we'll be running a little light on coverage but rest assured, we will have a few things to help you avoid working. Everywhere else, we apologise.
Like zombies? 'drMikey' sends word that he is selling prints of the acrylic painting that won him an honourable mention in our recent Left 4 Dead art contest. Brain-tastic.

So a post on the weekend reminded me that I bought Aquaria as part of the Humble Bundle...
I fired it up last night and wow this game is Metroid mixed with Ecco... and even though I ragequit after getting lost, I fired it up today and really enjoyed it, unlocked a few powers...
For two guys in two years it's an impressive achievement!
Check it out!

Anyone tried this? Sounds pretty cool, if a little expensive. If I could get this on my phone as well that would perfect though.

Huaraches:
I made myself a pair of huaraches (light running sandals) by following this guide: http://www.invisibleshoe.com/how-to-make-huaraches/ . I used an old yoga mat as the sole, and my first attempt at lacing was just a test -- I used butcher's twine since I had nothing suitable around the house. They lasted for about 2 minutes of walking before the knot pulled out of the bottom of the sandal and unravelled the lacing. Next day I went to walmart and found some leather lacing, some little metal eyelets, and some soft but really faggy looking rainbow "braiding cord".
I hammered some eyelets into the soles and used the leather lacing so as to look like a badass when wearing them. The lacing was sort of rough between my toes and the eyelets soon lifted out of the sole and were just dangling on the lacing, which didn't really feel nice. After I removed the eyelets and relaced the huaraches they actually felt pretty nice.
On a dare I wore them to a dim sum restaurant and also on the bus and subway, and they were actually really comfortable. I am looking forward to trying the braiding cord because I think they'll be that much nicer.
I did a little bit of running (like 5 mins) in them and they seemed well suited.
Espresso:
Last week I delved into a new kilo of coffee that makes assloads of crema, unlike any I'd used before.. I guess I've never seen this much robusta in a blend before. When I pulled a shot, the stream coming out wasn't a line of dark caramel, it was a thick (in diameter), quick gush of nougat-coloured coffee. The taste was really sour and lemony. This weekend I worked on dialing in my grind with this coffee and it's got to be way finer than the other coffee's I've ground. Now that I've got it fine enough, the espresso is actually really nice. Sort of chocolatey. I also worked some more on my milk steaming technique, which I think I almost have consistent. I just need to learn how to pour some nice art and I'm set on that front.
Cheese:
One of my friends sent me a recipe for creole cream cheese: http://www.nolacuisine.com/2006/08/02/creole-cream-cheese-recipe-2/ . This got me excited about making my own cheese, and I found this beginner's guide: http://biology.clc.uc.edu/fankhauser/cheese/Cheese98.htm . I picked up a box of rennet tablets from a specialty grocery store on the way to work this morning so I am looking forward to making my own cheese. I guess I'll also try to make my own ricotta from the whey.

I'm trying to get my old Audigy 2 to work on my newer Win7 64-bit system. The Creative installer says it doesn't detect it, but Windows does. Is it worth the hassle to get it working? or should I just get an X-Fi or Xonar?

I've been working on trying to iron out various openings, specifically a Terran opening atm - I've even been keeping a starcraft notebook, on Day9's advice, which does help to keep my thoughts focused, but damn, I need more time spent playing against practice buddies! If anyone wants a practice partner - hit me up. I'm scott dot laverick on google mail.

My Onkyo TX-SR608 is connected to my TiVo anf my PS3, among other things. The TiVo is on the CBL/SAT input (HDMI) and the PS3 is on the GAME input (HDMI).
Everything worked great for like a month, until this morning. I turn on my TV and reciever expecting to see TiVo, and I am welcomed with a blue screen. Check the inputs they are fine. Check the GAME input by putting on the PS3; he works too. Flip back to the CAT/SAT input and the TiVo works.
The CAT/SAT (TiVo) only works when the PS3 is on. What the fuck?

Who is considered one of the best C. Vipers in the league? Where can I find videos of said player? Youtube seems to be a little scarce.
I FINALLY just managed to find a SSFIV fightpad from a local ebgames to finally upgrade from the default controller. I want to try and get kind of good now and I want to start w/ C. Viper or Ibuki as my main.
Do I just browse and read Shoryuken all day?

Went down to pick up some weed killer, and like many trips there I thought I could walk a couple aisles in case i see something that reminds me that I need to fix it in the house. The parking lot seemed populated the same as any other day, but once I got inside it was very very different.
The place had orange clad employees on almost every aisle. Every single person I walked past asked me if I needed something, or help finding something. I mean the first guy asked and I said "Yeah I need some RoundUP but I know where it's at."
But then on the way there, and when I get there 2-3 employees standing there. I tell them I got it. then I go to head over to another section, there are standing there in like security on a parade route, and every one of them asked if I needed help. After the 15th (i'm really trying not to exaggerate) person asked if I needed help I turned straight for the self checkout and left. They didn't even leave me alone there, trying to assist me with my one freaking item.
Dammit Home Depot, why you gotta fuck up the one place I can go and get some peace. Now I'm all fucking pissed off because I needed a new lever for my upstairs toilet, but I'm not going back

I am confused why this politician would go on TV and attack Kobe Bryant with this "Can he even point to Washington, D.C., on a map?".

I recently started working at an indoor rec center (pool, meeting rooms, and gym), I once in a while have to clean the stuff off the changing room floor. It seems only age 45+ are in this changing room, and they are always naked and don't really care to much about being o'natural.
Question is when you're in the changing room and showers do you at least attempt to hide your manjewels?

Anyone know much about this? Motor City Online always seemed like kind of a cool idea, same with TDU, but none of them ever really took off, did they?
NFS has somehow almost always managed to keep me interested in just about every game in the franchise. Adding MMO aspects to it could be pretty cool. Looks like it's priced at $20? I imagine it's subscription based though. I might have to give it a try at least for the first month.

Good for Asus, now we can see some real innovation and competitive pricing. Asus may not be as stylish as Apple, nor have the most cutting edge technology. What they have is proven success in taking a form factor and in a short period of time making it powerful and cheap. True low-end breakthroughs aren't going to come from HP or Dell, it's not their market segment. Asus is very strong in the netbook market, arguably an industry leader in that segment.
Some of the early spec features for the 12" Eee Pad EP121:
+ Intel Core 2 Duo ULV processor (the EP101TC cpu is unannounced)
+ 2MP Web cam
+ A stylus
+ Windows 7 (the EP101TC is expected to use Windows Embedded Compact 7)
The emergence of Asus into the tablet market could very well be a game changer.

Lego Rock Band is finally $30 regular price. When you add $10 for the import to RB, you've got a $40+tax 47 song track pack (finally below $1 a song).
Sure, it will probably keep dropping in price, but at least its a bit more attractive now.
