Call of Duty: Black Ops Announced, Due in November
by Alice O'Connor, Apr 30, 2010 4:19am PDTCall of Duty: World at War developer Treyarch has announced that the latest entry in the long-running shooter series is named Call of Duty: Black Ops and will be released on November 9, 2010, ahead of its revelation on tonight's episode of GameTrailers TV.
While the announcement gives no details on the game, it has long been rumoured that Treyarch's next Call of Duty title would be set in the Vietnam War era. PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases should be expected, considering the franchise's history.
While all seems in order at Treyarch, its sister studio--Call of Duty creator Infinity Ward--is in turmoil. After the studio's co-founders Vince Zampella and Jason West were fired by owner Activision in March, a large proportion of its staff quit--many to join West and Zampella's new studio, Respawn Entertainment. Activision is now being sued by thirty-eight current and former employees for unpaid royalties plus damages.
We'll no doubt learn more about Call of Duty: Black Ops on GameTrailers TV tonight.

The rumor that Black Ops was the subtitle of Treyarch's latest entry was accompanied by more info that the game would take place across a wide time period (end of WWII up to present day). I think Treyarch could hit this out of the park and by consequence become the new caretakers of the CoD franchise. Consider...
- You get rid of a single Soap/Roach protagonist and body hop across many different eras and hot spots. Globe trotting like this will be awesome instead of being locked into one period. Plus, they get to step through key historical events which will keep things grounded. MW2's story got a little too carried away with itself. Most people agree that MW1's story was better.
- Treyarch's campaign/story mode is much more likely to support coop.
- Treyarch has the feedback from MW2's multiplayer and will remove things that didn't work so well. Like MW2's story, most opinions I've heard from players or reviewers say that while MW2 multiplayer is good, MW1 did it better. So, we could see a return to more CoD4 gameplay tenants: less killstreaks, fewer notifications popping up all over the god damn screen (FIRST BLOOD, PAYBACK, LONG SHOT). We can also expect a few new perks, like the dogs they gave us from WaW, plus the guns and perks can now span across 40-50 years.
Bottom line is that if lots of people on my friends list are playing Black Ops then I will too, especially if they bring back my beloved MP5 SD along with the Juggernaut and Martyrdom perks. Oh yes. I said bring back Juggernaut and Martyrdom. I sold MW2 a month ago when I decided the Stimulus pack wasn't worth it. The only thing I'd really miss from MW2 is the riot shield and my throwing knife.
