Why do we (nerds) spend so much time looking forward to the things that we don't have yet instead of reveling in everything that we do have? It gets to where you have trouble enjoying anything that isn't in anticipation of something new. Is anyone else obsessing about the release of something new?

For me it was Oblivion.
To the endless previews I read to the games countdown videos before it was released, such as this 30 second one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUfRy1l1bcw&fmt=18
Starting out in the game, you'd be low on skills and possessions, so the outside world was pretty daunting. I'd start off swimming around in lakes, annoying mudcrabs or perhaps stalk some deer outside of the Imperial City.
There was just so much to do and see that it kinda blew my mind at the time. Finally I could do whatever I wanted in an epic and open landscape. I could go off to help people out, take on quests and discover lands....or I could just walk up the nearest hill in the morning to overlook the sun rising up through the trees.
The game just felt alive and that it didn't just revolve around you. You had all the potential to be the greatest man that ever lived.....or you could just go off to pick plants in the wilderness.
I loved that choice. I love all games where you can decide whether you'd like to join the thick of the battle or to just stand back for a breather.
Possibly one of the most engrossing things about the game was the soundtrack. Its easily my favourite of any game. I mean you'd be walking around after killing a group of bandits, maybe healing yourself up then and you'd stumble upon a waterfall you'd never seen before. Then this song would come on and you'd feel you were right there:

Also, the more I played the game, the more I thought to myself how great it would've been to have lived in this place. Life seemed so simple in Oblivion. I must've put in over 200-300 hours into this game because I'd savour every little thing.
Forgive my nostalgia :)

Google’s Profit Rises 37% and Its Revenue 23%, but Analysts Wanted More
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/16/technology/16google.html?ref=business
they actually HIRE 800 people!!! wait no, that's bad. One factor limiting Google’s earnings growth is the expansion of its own operations. It hired 800 employees in the quarter, the largest increase in two years.
then the stock tumbles about 5% in after hours trading. what?

Also apparently my monitor “burned up†while I was gone. I got this news from my mom so the whole system could be fried for all I know. What would be a good 22in replacement?

I've been wanting a fun Star Wars game for a while(not an mmorpg), and the last one I played was Jedi Academy. Though the story was crap, I loved the gameplay and especially the lightsaber battles. What are your thoughts?
I'm undecided right now and would appreciate the help. Thanks in advance!

You pro-soundcard people keep harping on how amazing the Xonar DX is, how do I do speaker fill mode on it? (2.0 stereo out of 4.0 speakers?) Is this possible or not? I can't find the option and it's pretty fucking standard stuff.

Here's where we post a favourite moment from playing on XBL1 with Shackers. Mine had to be Midtown Madness 3 - frantic fun, hilarious moments, awesome shackers, one of whome frequently sang some stupid ascending song with the words "I put your ballsack into my mouth". Truly an unsung masterpiece. PGR2 was pretty legendary too, but much as I love it I truly suck at it - got kicked from one of the last games on it last night. :)
How about you? Pour one out and share a favourite gaming moment from XBL1 with Shackers.

Photoshop CS3 - Somehow I broke everything so no matter what tool I click, I only get the hand and I can't do anything with it at all. Nothing seems to be locked. If I click a select tool, nothing selects, paintbrush doesn't work, etc.
Anybody have any idea how to fix this?
Thanks!!

Metal Gear Solid 2 was the best game in the series.
Sure, the story wasn't as good as the first - and got downright stupid near the end. And everybody hated the fact that Snake was replaced with a crying, girly acrobat. But the overall package makes it the best in the series.
The graphics were superb and were a substantial improvement from the first game. The cutscenes were fantastic, if a little on the long side. And the sound design? Pure ear-orgasms.
The game had just the right blend of old and new: You're still sneaking around, except it's daytime now. But you can hang from shit! But you still have your trusty silenced pistol to take out guards, not to mention the good old neck snap. The list goes on...
The media buildup to this game was so phenomenal that even years later there aren't that many more games more anticipated. Everything from the E3 trailer to the Japanese-only demo that came with Zone of the Metal Gear Solid 2 Demo, people were practically foaming at the mouth in anticipation.
I also loved the little touches: The fact that ice melted if it was spilled. If you shot a bag of flour, it went everywhere. I also loved the little easter-eggs, like masturbating Snake, his commandant crush, and all the silly conversations about Vamp's sexuality.
But of course, the most important thing is the gameplay itself, and this is where MGS2 shines. Between hiding in lockers, hanging from ledges, and peeking around corners, you had tons of new ways to avoid detection. But unlike some of the other games in the series, once you got really good at the game you could just blow through it - all while keeping the guards unaware. I remember challenging myself to beating the entire game on Hard w/o ever being spotted. Fun times.
The control scheme was great too. It was complex, and most people never grasped the subtleties of it, but if you did it was nirvana. Being able to gently peek forward while in a locker to peek out, being able to stand on your tip-toes to hit a slightly taller target, or being able to gently left off the trigger instead of firing a round - all these little things are lacking in other games, even MGS4 if I'm not mistaken.
I also liked the idea of not having to deal with too much micro-management like you have in MGS3/4: There's no camo suit to change, no food to eat, no "emotional status" (effectively a second health bar) to worry about, etc. The soldiers are also still dumb enough that you can run on most surfaces w/o alerting them - unlock MGS3 where if you do anything more than tip-toe through the grass you set them off...
The best thing about MGS2 though was that when you're good at it, it feels really awesome. Running around, spanning necks, never being seen. Fighting the Harrier and killing it with a barrage of rockets within 30 seconds. And then the big Rex fight at the end, completely owning the shit out of all of them with the Stinger and they don't even tough you. All of it was just awesomesauce.
I always wished they made an expansion pack or something (like they did w/ the VR missions for MGS1) where you got to play as Snake, doing whatever he was doing when Raiden wasn't around. Too bad they never made it.
Now I want to dig out the PS2 and play again...

The new mark and execute mode works great with two players. Between that and the stealth takedowns, it leads to a lot of great gameplay moments where the players can set up some situations that are immensely satisfying. Timing tings so that you both clear the maximum number of guys in a room without being detected makes you feel like you just pulled off something awesome.
But even when things don't go to plan, it's just as good. Dashing across a courtyard, sliding into the shadows behind someone and then grabbing him for a silent kill is exciting, but it's equally fun when you get detected and have to fend off a squad of hostiles while your teammate sneaks around behind them and drops down unseen from above like Batman.
The gameplay offers a lot of unexpected twists that I won't spoil, but I think that few people would be disappointed with this as a co-op offering. There are other multiplayer modes that also sound fun, like an adversarial mode where the two spies are hunting enemies separately, but can also take down each other for a point bonus, and every time they get spotted by an enemy, it shows their opponent where they are. After finishing the co-op game, I've got some interest in going back and trying that.
