Free CryEngine 3 Standalone Release Planned
by Alice O'Connor, Apr 13, 2010 6:50am PDTCrysis developer Crytek is planning to release a free standalone edition of its Crysis 2-powering CryTek 3 engine, Develop reports, following in the footsteps of the free edition of Unity as well as Gears of War developer Epic's Unreal Development Kit.
"We do want to make a standalone free platform that people can run independent of CryEngine that will also be up to speed with the latest engine," said Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli, though he offered no insight into a timetable or licensing options.
CryEngine 3 will first be seen in Crytek's Crysis 2, which is due to hit PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 between October 1 and December 31, 2010. Our Chris recently got to preview the shooter sequel and peek into the thoughts and minds behind Crysis 2.
