Weekend Confirmed Episode 2

By Garnett Lee, Apr 02, 2010 12:30pm PDT Garnett, Brian, and Jeff hit the second Weekend Confirmed in full stride. Good thing, too, because it's a full one. Two packed segments of Whatcha Been Playin? include Super Street Fighter 4, Just Cause 2, Metro 2033, Alan Wake, and more. iPad arrives this week and it takes top spot in the Four Minute Warning queue. The Front Page with the rebirth of EGM, seemingly imminent announcement of Gears of War 3, and a PlayStation 3 update that removes Linux support in the news keeps the show rocking right to the end.

  • Good episode, but I wish that Garnett could be a bit less antagonistic in a "broverload" way. One example was at about 1 hour 48 minutes, in the news section Brian was talking about jumping into a MW2 match after having left it aside since January, and describing all the killstreak spam; Garnett goes "waah waah waah, I couldn't do anything.... dude I just gotta give you a hard time." There was another part where either Jeff or Brian was trying to recall the name of an indie developer, and Garnett starts saying "Don't tell him the name, don't tell him the name." Stuff like that makes me stab for the fast forward button. Sometimes that stuff, when exececuted properly and not in a repetitive manner, can bring across a point, but when it gets to the point of frat party bantering, I get exasperated, especially when I'm in the middle of a drive. It's part of why I skip every other Giant Bomb (when Ryan and Jeff get into that string of frat boy "broverload"), and it's part of why I really like Idle Thumbs (because they either articulate their points, or turn it into something absolutely hilarious, like The Kane of Lynch, turret sequence criticism, or the Dawn of Discovery tool-based export-driven economy).

That said, I love Four Minute Warning, as it forces everyone to get their points staged ahead of time, and keep their counterpoints relatively brief and on-target. And I hadn't heard one of Garnett Lee's podcasts before, so when I heard Weekend Confirmed 1, I almost thought that Art Bell was hosting it.
