Evening Reading: Digital Distribution and You!
by Brian Leahy, Mar 01, 2010 5:00pm PSTPortal 2 evidence?
As I sit and wait for Steam to finally go live with the pre-load for Battlefield: Bad Company 2--it might be live by the time you read this--my thoughts turn to how much PC gaming has changed for me since digital distribution became more prevalent. As consoles become more profitable and retail stores began cutting back on shelf space for PC games, it was harder to snag a new game on release day (without pre-ordering).
Now, I can purchase a game and pre-load it so that the moment it is released, I get access. I've seen a few users complain about "not owning" these digital games or express concerns about their digital library if any of these digital services go under. All valid concerns, but I'll blindly trust my digital overlords for the convenience.

Tonight's Game of the Evening is:
Homeworld - "Probably the most atmospheric RTS ever made. For such a simple story, it managed to make a lot of people turn into big sissies on the 3rd mission. One of the last games to have a real manual, too." (Beady)
I too miss manuals! Especially now that all of my PC games are digital and console game manuals are barely three pages long.
Here are some videogame stories from today:
- The PlayStation 3 is having some problems.
- Analyst Michael Pachter isn't too concerned, though.
- Garnett previews God of War III.
- Braid creator, Jonathan Blow, details his new game.
Also, StarCraft II vortex nukes! (Thanks, Felraier)

What does everyone think? To me, it's a mixed bag. Some of the tracks sound great, but a lot of them don't resonate with me at all. I think I'd rather just buy the tracks that I really like than the whole album. Or maybe I just have to listen to the whole thing a few more times. My favorite Gorillaz album is D-Sides, the b-sides album for Demon Days.

Gundead Defense multiplayer zombie wild west tower defense game is now on the Appstore!
http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/gundead-defense/id345386238?mt=8
I was lead programmer on this offshoot project that our small team built between two larger projects.
If's free! It has a full campaign! It has multiplayer! Zombies! Cowboys!
This is tower defense like you've never played it before. Try it! I'm quite proud of how it turned out considering the BS our team went through and how quickly it was developed. And somehow we made this using Torque...
If you like it, download the Zombie expansion and show your support for our little team! :)
Don't forget to review!

a) there's some incredibly cool stuff to be learned in even a cursory overview of things like different sort algorithms, knowing how to code a search of a BST both iteratively and recursively, looking at a trie and saying "oh, predictive text", and I'm really excited about studying it more AND
b) that said, I can't think of any programming problem I've run into in the last ten years that would've been easier to solve or performed better if I had studied that stuff in more depth or sooner in my career.
Hooray for high level languages? Further support of "web development isn't REAL programming" egomaniacs? Or just proof that sometimes it's OK to build a house if you're a carpenter and not a structural engineer (and let's face it, unless you're working for Facebook or Google the web sites you're building are more like houses than like suspension bridges)?

There is a lot of great music in Starcraft 2, but this turns into some really bluesy guitar riffing later on that I didn't expect. It's pretty great!

My 360 pro that I bought a little over 2 years ago died with the RROD a few weeks ago. I had purchased an extended warranty from Sam's club, and called them about the issue. Because of some hiccups, they agreed to replace the 360 entirely. They then ordered a new 360 for me from ToysRUs (wtf?). I got that 360 last Friday, and promptly recovered my gamertag, transferred my xbla licenses to it, and popped in mw2.
After about 2 hours of MW2, the brand new console red ringed. Literally within hours of turning it on for the first time.
Fortunately, ToysRUs was nice enough to let me exchange the 360 at their store for a new one. Now I'm trying to transfer the xbla licenses to the new (3rd) 360, but apparently you can only use the transfer tool once every YEAR.
So I called in to see if they could do it over the phone, I had to go through 10 minutes of "troubleshooting" to be escalated to another level where I could have my issues resolved. Once I was escalated, I had to re-explain the entire situation to that guy and then he told me that he could not resolve the issue, but would escalate it to "the high department" and they would call me back within 48hrs to help me with my issue.
tldr; M$ $UXX()ORZ
just kidding, but seriously, this is a huge pain in the ass, it's really getting old having to jump through a bunch of hoops to play games because of Microsoft's poor manufacturing process. :( I am grateful though that ToysRUs let me return my Sams Club warranty xbox for a new one. We'll see if this new one lives through the night, or if a few hours of MW2 will kill it too.

"We are aware that the internal clock functionality in the PS3 units other than the slim model, recognized the year 2010 as a leap year. Having the internal clock date change from February 29 to March 1 (both GMT), we have verified that the symptoms are now resolved and that users are able to use their PS3 normally.
If the time displayed on the XMB is still incorrect, users are able to adjust time settings manually or via the internet. If we have new information, we will update you through the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."
WTF. FIX IT.

Last night I dreamed I was a Viking brewmaster with an epic Dragon Age-esque braided mustache, rolling musky barrels of beer between tables of surly warriors. Needless to say awesomeness ensued...maybe, I don't really remember. But it did leave me with a curious itch to try home brewing. My question is, where should I start. Should I dig up online resources and order kits or seek out a local store of some type? I have zero knowledge on the subject and any help would be appreciated.

Any non-spoilery tips? I know everyone hated the ending, and I don't care about that. Should I get the DLC before playing it?

Today my mother had to go to one of those corporate restructuring meetings, so she found out that she's going to be working in another division of the company, I'm totally glad that she isn't losing her job.
I've been dealing with a lot of family issues recently, and really I don't need any more stress on my shoulders, especially with my current health issues. I have been talking about these issues in other, more appropriate and helpful places, just so you know, shack old buddy, old pal.

No doubt you've noticed the trend towards reusable and pseudo-reusable shopping bags. Heavy canvas bags to cheap nearly-disposable almost-paper bags and everything in between. In a way, they make sense: They're good for the environment, they won't split open like plastic, and they won't get waterlogged with condensation and tear like paper can.
There's just one little problem: They're bulky. If you buy more than a few days or maybe a week's worth of groceries at a time, you end up having to carry a bag of bags with you. They're liable to be forgotten at home since they don't fit conveniently into any commonly-carried containers. This is no good.
These bags, on the other hand, are awesome: http://www.takemetote.com/totes.html
They're made of lightweight nylon or polyester fabric and are designed to fold up into little squares. I can probably fit four or six into the inner pocket of my jacket. They'll easily go into a purse, briefcase, man-bag, messenger bag, or glove compartment. They're strong and have nice, wide, comfortable handles. They're only $2-$3 each.
If you can find them, I recommend them. Unfortunately, it looks like they're currently only sold at Wegmans supermarkets, so you may not be able to get them locally.
