PS3 Problems Hopefully Fixed 'within the Next 24 Hours,' Sony Advises Not Using Console

46
With some, but not all, PlayStation 3 owners worldwide currently unable to play certain games or connect to the PlayStation Network, Sony has now issued a statement.

The issue seemingly stems from "a bug in the clock functionality," according to the company, which adds "we hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours." As reported, the problems only appear to plague the older (so-called "fat") PlayStation 3 models, with the more recent "slim" models unaffected.

Until then, Sony says "if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data."

In the company's words:

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

  • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
  • When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; "An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)".
  • When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; "Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game."
  • When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; "The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)"
  • Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Not quite sure how they can fix this. I mean if they have to patch, we have to turn our consoles on and they get messed up. Unless they are just hoping that it will resolve on the next calendar day by itself.

No, but you do have to turn it on, and since it doesn't matter if it connects to PSN or not, you're hosed.

They say the problem is tied to the system clock so it doesn't matter if you are online or off, it's going to get fucked as soon as you turn it on before the update can download.

Worst case in all likelihood is a downloadable firmware update via flash drive or mailed out CD's. I'm fairly certain Sony has clever people that will get this fixed.

Maybe they're really against the Ubisoft DRM and wanted to showcase a worst case scenario. I bet this goes straight to the fat cats in Washington. It's all connected man!!

No, you can still go to system update just fine.

I don't think they are worried about people just having the console on. All you have to do is turn the console on to get an update... I think what they are worried about is actually trying to play games and watch videos etc... I think that is what could cause problems. Just having the thing sitting there idling probably wont do any harm. That's just my guess though.

Soon as i rebooted mine last night (because bayonetta was stuck at a loadscreen for an hour and would not play for some strange reason... wonder why?) I got the 8001050F error, and it went to shit.

So far only tried bayonetta, but i know Heavy Rain and Dantes wont work as well so im not even putting them in the thing. (im not losing trophies , screw that) All i can do safely is play PS2 games.

My PSN was set on Auto-Login is why.

Either way its the clock/calander so turning on your PS3 = screwed up. You wont hurt anything buy playing on it or shouldnt anyway, but you wont be able to get trophies or anything because it will not sync. Anything you aquire will be gone and thats if you can get anything to work in the first place.

Themes, games, psn movies, trophys, calander/clock are broken.

Based on what I've been reading.. it sounds like more than just a synching problem.. it sounds like there is potential to flat out loose saved games and never receive trophies if you play the games (if they even work). I think that is what they are worried about.

Turning the console on isn't really a risk, just don't play any games with trophy support. If you try to play any downloaded (full) games, it won't work. Downloaded demos do work however. Unfortunately I didn't download the GoW3 demo before this happened and I've been wanting to play it for the past day now with no luck.

Fuck Sony. I'm glad I bought an Xbox now.

You guys are idiots. The PS3 doesn't -frag- just by logging on, it just has issues related to the buggy calender, you can still semi-use your PS3. You can turn on your PS3 and download the patch with no problem. Dear Christ my fellows, do a little critical thinking and learn to read.
