Evening Reading: RTS Madness!
by Brian Leahy, Feb 25, 2010 5:00pm PSTEvery once and a while, there seems to be a rush of games in a particular genre. Right now, the RTS is hot news, mister. Blizzard launched the beta for StarCraft II, EA's Command & Conquer 4 is also in beta, Supreme Commander 2 hits next week, and the first Dawn of War II expansion pack, Chaos Rising, drops the week after. It's the season for real-time strategy.
All of these titles have different gameplay systems and offer unique experiences. RTS gamers tend to get extremely focused on one game at a time, much like FPS players. It's a sad trend that makes a small genre even smaller. I wish the teams behind the non-Blizzard game all the luck in the world. It's still just in beta, right? How about a Game of the Evening?
Savage: The Battle for Newerth - "Savage was one of the rare attempts at RTS/FPS fusion. The incredible thing is that the gameplay worked, it was stable, it was fast and fun. More incredible is it somehow managed to be not as popular as it deserved to be. The FPS portion included multiple classes while the RTS commander gave orders, built units, and assigned buildings to be built. Each team supported up to 128 players." (LoioshDwaggie)
Daily required reading, Video Games 101:
- Alpha Protocol gets a release date, again.
- Plants vs. Zombies sold a bunch on the iPhone.
- Final Fantasy I & II are released on the iPhone.
- New Battlefield: Bad Company 2 videos make me happy.
Finally, I've spent way too much time today putting random phrases into TranslationParty, which translates from English to Japanese to English to Japanese and so on. Tip: StarCraft-related sentences are particularly amusing. Or this.
Oh, and the last ever (probably not) Day of Defeat: Source Shackbattle is tonight. So go play it with Shackers one last time!

Cool timer: I have been using it for quite some time... but it is buggy. Sometimes the time will jump to infinite and you don't hear a thing
Grindstone2: I have been using it for quite some time... great for managing your time but doesn't have an alarm... which I need badly
Not too sure... maybe in a few hours I will come up with an alternative. Maybe you have an idea.

So anyways, looking into buying a good, not to expensive 1TB external hard-drive, for backups. My 250GB is becoming full, and its one of those cheap internal-HD-encased-to-make-it-feel-like-external. I'll prolly recycle it into a second internal instead. Photoshop is crying for a separate scratch disk.
So what are the good ones?
It's just gonna sit on my desk, so no fancy portability needed.

The GTX285 arrived today; I installed it, booted off of Memtest86+, and completed two test runs successfully. Yay. I have Windows 7 and 3 Noctua 140mm fans on order to replace the Corsair fans.
The 800D case is really quiet, even with the Corsair fans. The videocard fan is the loudest one in there, and it's faintly above the level of the other fans at idle. Ambient temperature at idle seems to be holding at 42 C. I have to remember that the i7 920 is a 130W TDP chip (wow, remember back when we got away from 130 W TDP CPUs from the NetBurst days to 65W Core 2 Duos? The heat is back!). Unless I throw Knoppix at it or something, I'll be waiting for the Windows 7 CD to arrive so I can start installing stuff.

I'll be in town, from London, next week visiting family. Anyone want to grab a few beers in the evening? I'll be in town on March 4th (rest of the week will be spent wallowing in the suburbs).
Short notice, I realise!

Lamborghini's test driver is named Max Venturi.
I see where I have gone wrong with regards to my love of testing :(.
They were on the disk of an old music synthesis program. The first:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5fRBkCt9qo
Every single file on this disk was a rendition of non-original music, so I don't believe this was just something the program's author whipped up.
The second is Bach, of that I'm absolutely certain:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpBklKYlTK8
I've heard it a million goddamn times, and I know it's in C major (it's transposed up a bit due to an emulator quirk), but that's not enough for me to Google it down. I know I'm asking for a facepalm by classical music buffs but it's worth it if I can find out what the hell this is.
There's actually a stunning low-res graphics display that the program generates in time with the music (hence the program's name) but I'm too lazy to get capture software.

It's not a perfect game by any stretch, but it's the closest I've gotten to the kind of tactical game I enjoy since the original Final Fantasy Tactics. Graphically, it's at least very pretty, and frequently gorgeous with the way it evokes the look of a sketchbook. The story really impressed me too, especially considering it's basically a brightly-colored anime reframing of World War 2, right down to certain operation settings, and even some of the warcrimes. It gets (relatively) dark in parts. The ending was exceptional, and considering what anime is usually capable of, surprisingly low key.
That said, some of the bullshit luck moves the computer can sometimes pull off, and a late-game need to grind in the skirmishes, as well as the sometime -crazy difficulty of certain battles, keep it from being totally top shelf. I honestly don't know how many times I lost an hour of battle progress to a single missed bullet.
The 8/10s in the world pretty much get it right. But if you have a PS3, and you like turn-based tactical games, you should REALLY pick this up.
So now I'm wondering what to play next. What say you?
-Get back into The Witcher (I'm 20 hours in, somewhere in chapter 2. Stopped playing at the end of summer.).
-50 Cent: Blood on the Sand
-Assassin's Creed 1 (PC), which I've never played at all.

Batman Arkham Asylum PC is 75% off on Game for Windows on Demand (Microsoft's digital distribution service).
So that's $12.50 for an awesome game. Completely worth it and if you haven't checked it out I suggest you do.

Two questions: (1) Why would somebody sell a 2008 car with only 20k miles on it, and (2) would you consider it riskier to buy a sportier car like that that probably doesn't have the best reliability ratings to start with, and probably has been driven harder?
It could be that I'm just being nervous.

I'm finally playing Mass Effect 1, and really liking it so far. My question is this, I'm at the point where some of the romance is heating up and I'm wondering--if I start this shit with one of these chicks, do I end up having to stick with the same girl? Or can I be a whore and make the rounds? If it's the first option, I want to make sure I pick the chick I dig the most--otherwise I'll just do whatever or whomever.
