Natural Selection 2 Pre-Alpha Gameplay Shown

Indie developer Unknown Worlds has released a little Natural Selection 2 pre-alpha gameplay footage, giving a look at the current state of its PC sci-fi RTS-FPS hybrid.

The pre-alpha footage--and do remember that it is pre-alpha--comes in celebration of being voted 'Indie Game of the Year' at modding and indie hub ModDB and follows a successful discount bundle promotion with Wolfire Games' rabbity 'Overgrowth.'

Last November, UW founder Charlie Cleveland told us that NS2 was tentatively slated for "early next year" though a date has still be to given. $20 pre-orders grant access to the editor and a spot in the beta, while a $40 'Special Edition' packs alpha access too.

Anyone know what limits their are on modding?

Specificaly can you have a third person cam?

Can you import your own models via 3DS max aka Auto Desk?

Can't wait. But you have to have money flowing out the wazoo to invest in a pre-order 1 year (undetermined) ahead of time. As much as I liked the original who would pay for something thats not even close?

I get that game developers release very early build game footage to keep fans and the community interested, but I think it can sometimes have a negative effect if the engine/ game build is still in very infant stages, like this. Better to stick to screenshots until decent Beta video footage can be made.

While I appreciate the fact that NS2 is being lovingly crafted, which is why it's taking so long to be released, I also want these guys to be able to see major revenue from their project, rather than burning it all away making the game perfect. Using Blizzard's "when it's ready" doctrine doesn't make a whole lot of sense for a small company.

It may have been best to get something out the door last year, capturing most of the customers who were going to buy the game, and generating cash flow right away. Then Underworld's quest for perfection could be realized through gradual patching and working with the community.

Anyways, I hope I'm wrong and I wish the best for Underworld and this game.

Man, I really miss old school perfectly visible, yet not distracting, crosshairs. I am tired of semi-visible shit like in HL2, D3 and now AvP (I am talking Marine here).

At least this is opaque blue but I kinda feel are going to make it modern and semi-transparent.
