Star Trek Online Paid Extras Store Launches With Federation Klingon, Ferengi Races
by Alice O'Connor, Feb 03, 2010 8:03am PSTStar Trek Online developer Cryptic Store has launched its boldy-going PC MMORPG's paid extras store with $3 playable Federation-faction Ferengi and Klingon races.
Costing 80 and 240 Cryptic Points respectively ($1 and $3), the races unlock for all account slots offering prosthetic-tastic appearances with appropriate character traits.
While Klingons are already a playable race in Star Trek Online, they joys of having a Cornish pastie for a forehead are otherwise limited to the PvP-focused Klingon faction.
Star Trek Online launched yesterday with subscription fees of $15 per month.

Look at it this way your paying around 54 cents a day in WoW to login for your Frost Emblems with the daily heroic dungeon.

A Subscription MMO with a micro-transaction store. Isn't $15 a month enough for them ?

Players nowadays always demand a lot of free extra content for their MMOs and most MMOs do release extra free content every month or so. That content requires content teams to produce which costs time and money. The content they produce has to try and please their whole customer base if possible "I'm paying my sub I deserve content my character can use as well" mentality.
Microtransaction content is different, they don't have to please everyone because if you don't like you don't buy it. They just have to please a percentage of their customer base enough to fund the time and cost involved in producing that content. In that respect microtransaction content can be a lot more specific and interesting that the normal free content produced.
Obviously I think there needs to be some good balance between the cost of the micro stuff and the price of the monthly sub and I don't think any MMO has got it quite right yet. But it could end up being a good thing when someone does.

The game is a blast and its sad that people will refuse to play it because of this. You don't have to buy it, it's a choice. At some point , it will most likely become a free part of the game anyway.
