Morning Discussion

Today I learned that the head of the Royal Navy is called the First Sea Lord. If that fact doesn't get your day off to a great start, I don't know what could. First Sea Lord.

    Demon's Souls
    AKA
Searching for a world to invade...

Yesterday was apparently black phantom day for me. I killed an NPC black phantom on 2-2 and got myself a black eye stone. I immediately decided to try it out on 1-2 and found myself in a game with some chick with a bigass Cloud Strife sword. She seemed to be away from the screen so I started whacking on her from behind and got her down to about half health, at which point she woke up and rolled away and gobbled some moon grass. Then she started shooting shit at me that HURT and she pulled out a spear. Remembering what people said yesterday about the spear that wrecks durability, I decided my little experiment was not turning out very well so I got behind something and used my white eye stone to return to my world. Well, at least I know the black stone works!

Later, I was summoned as a blue phantom into someone's 3-1 game. I got lost in the first part of the level so I decided to follow him to see where I should go. As we're running, I see something red dart out in front of me and then disappear. I'm thinking, "WTF?" because I know what it looked like. So I get my shield up and I round the corner and sure enough there's a black phantom already in the game. He comes diving at me with some ninja knife thing, which I manage to deflect, and then I stab at him but miss. The next I know he hits me with the damn plague. Shit. So I back off and hope the other guy will jump in but he's lost again running into corners and shit. Then I'm poisoned. Dammit. Then he hits me with some death cloud and ALL my shit breaks. All of my armor and weapons. Haha. At this point I realized this was not going to work so I used my white eye stone to return to my world and cut my losses before I die and lose all the souls I have. Of course I ended up spending all of my souls along with all of the hero/solder souls I had in the bank repairing my armor.

Solo, I did some more killing on 2-2 and 4-1 last night. I actually stumbled on the boss of 2-2 and I hate him. My guy is bad at fighting bosses on his own. Does additional dexterity help movement speed at all? On 1-2, I managed to destroy the Tower Knight by summoning blue phantoms when I happened to be in body form. He was down to a very low amount of health before the two phantoms got kicked out (which always happens when I fight Tower Knight with other people) and I was able to finish him off. I suppose I could work with a team on the other bosses too, until I get some better gear.

I found Patches on 2-2 and even though he tried to get me killed (unsuccessfully), I am finding his services useful since he sells heavy arrows and those hit hard enough to make enemies take notice. I found some holy arrows on 4-1 but not enough for any major offensives.

You make me really want to play this game...

Bringing up your endurance will help your movement as it's tied into your equipment weight. Try taking a few pieces of armor off or put away your left hand weapon (also arrows add to your weight considerably if you tend to carry a lot).

If you get your equipment weight under half of what your max is you can roll very easily and quickly. Try it and see. I actually had to fight the Tower Knight with just with nothing more than a helmet, leggings and a sword =P.

I was thinking of lightening my load but I weighed that against how I tend to get hit alot (which of course may be tied to my sluggishness :)) but I'll try going lighter tonight.

I do have some lighter armor in the bank, so I'll try that. I don't carry "alot" of arrows, usually only 50-60 in my pack at a time, so that's like 5-6 stone. (I also realized that I implicitly refer to the weight in the game as "stone." Thanks to years of playing Ultima and managing character weights in that!)

lol at the Ultima reference! Later in the game you can pick up a ring of great strength which will nearly double your equiment weight max you can carry.

            January 19, 2010 6:14 AM

I have the rings of great strength and herculean strength. The first one ups the equip burden, the second one the item burden.

Right now I am using the cling ring plus the ring of great strength. If I ever get my ninjitsu improved I will probably trade the cling ring for something more effective but that extra 25% of HP is useful for my klutz of a paladin.

that's good then. since you already have the ring of great strength then just spend some soul levels on endurance so you can wear your current armour and equipment and still roll quickly (get your equip burder to just less than half of your max).

I guarantee it will help with PvP and beating bosses.

Dude... Haha. I swapped my armor for something a little lighter and now asskickery is up over 70% I should have tried this earlier; I knew going lighter gave you more agility but I didn't realize how dramatic the difference was!

I finally killed the red knight on 1-1... twice! Wow, he gives a ton of souls, it's a shame it's a PITA to get to him.

                Playing... right... now... >:|

Today I found 4-2, got up to 80k souls, and lost it all to a reaper. On the way back to my stain I, got cocky and, stumbled backwards off a cliff.

I sat there stunned as I realized I could get back to 80k in 2-3 runs in 4-2. :D Hint: The ring of avarice is my new best friend

This might be my GOTY folks :D

Ug, I am not sure how to approach 5-2 yet. --- My poison resist sucks so I guess I need to work on that. Poison seems more annoying than bothersome, but the thought of micro-spamming lotus' in the midst of fighting large trolls... meh. ---

You can also equip regenerating items like the regenerator's ring and the Adjucator's shield.

I have those two, but I need more, methinks. My first foray down there consumed about 10 lotus in 20 minutes, and that with island hopping most of the time. I guess I need to pump endurance and give up the thief's ring for poison resist, and maybe use a blessed weapon...

have you killed the assassin in the prison cage in 3-2? his armor makes for a good 5-2 set, since it has high-ish poison resist and is fairly light, though it is plate so you may not be able to roll like you used to, i can't recall exactly. I believe its called Gloom armor, I wore that plus the adjudicator's shield and regenerator ring and I was basically breaking even on damage to hp regen. keep that thief ring on though, it will help with the giants as well as the black phantom npc chilling in the middle of the swamp

                  January 19, 2010 7:27 AM

Since you can't roll in the muck anyway, it's not as big of a negative to equip heavy armor.

          • reply
            January 19, 2010 6:04 AM

I haven't tried bringing up my poison resistance, but even with rings and armour that protects against this you eventually end up poisoned or plagued anyways (surprisingly not much longer than without these precautions).

So I say you're better off using a holy weapone that give you some form of health regen and stacking a ring that gives health regen just to negate the effect. Probably the best you can do I think. =( The payoff and end of world 5 is awesome though.

If you have access to miracles, pick up cure, it's far more favorable than spamming your almost finite supply of lotus. Most importantly, you can pick up two pieces of gear that raise your poison resistance significantly, letting you wander through the swamp without instantly becoming infected.

              January 19, 2010 6:15 AM

I do have the creed gear /w poi resist... Cure seemed like a waste vs poison cloud, so I opted for that instead. In the end Cure would trade one consumable for another (Spice vs Lotus), vs the occasional extra dps and sneak kills.

Yeah 4-2 is serious death if you aren't careful. Those reapers and their minions can be rough, the sweeping eye beam they shoot would almost kill me in one hit!

4-2 is the best farming spot I found, and there were several full clears all the way to the boss gate before I bothered actually entering to fight the boss.

            January 19, 2010 6:15 AM

To clarify (from my post below) you do gain souls when you kill blue phantoms and living players as a black phantom, but the blue phantoms you kill don't lose those souls. They just get booted back into their own games with their souls intact. Living players obviously leave a bloodstain where they die containing their souls.

          January 19, 2010 6:13 AM

Nope. The only time you can lose anything as a phantom is if you die by accident as a black phantom (mainly, fall to your death). Then you lose a soul level. You never lose anything when you die as a blue phantom, regardless of how you die.

            January 19, 2010 6:15 AM

Do you also lose a soul level if you die to a monster as a black phantom? I thought it was any death other than by player-vs-player combat.

Also, when you lose a soul level, does the upgrade price remain the same? (I.e. if you paid 7500 for your last level, will it cost you ~8000 to get that level back or will it go back to 7500?)

            • reply
              January 19, 2010 6:17 AM

I'm not sure if you CAN die to a monster as a black phantom. They don't attack you. I suppose you might walk into a dragon's breath as another player pisses it off, but I don't know for sure if that would actually kill you or not. I imagine if it did, you would still lose a soul level though.

I'm not sure about the upgrade price, but I think it goes back down. You just have to earn those souls again.

I'm pretty sure you lose souls if you die to a Black Phantom (it's happened to me). Check out the wiki, fourth paragraph in the Co-op section. http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/online

Also, you can lose soul levels to a certain boss as a blue phantom.

Whether you complete the boss fight or die in the other players world you will always be transfered back to your world. If you died from anything other than a Black Phantom, you will be returned to your world with all the souls collected and your health and mp at full. If you died to a Black Phantom, you will lose about half of your souls. As the co-op session ends, each player is permitted to rate the other player(s) on a grade system which stays with the character, so that in the future, other players can know how good (or bad) a certain player is. From best to worst, the ratings are "S", "A", "B", "C", "D", and "E."

I played more NG+ last night... Managed to kill the Tower Knight though this time by cheesing him with arrows rather than killing him "for real" like I did in NG. I got pretty far in 2-1 but those damned ministers can easily 1-shot me with their ranged fire attacks if I'm not paying attention, which is pretty irritating. It sucks though because I want to unlock Blacksmith Ed again since I still have a lot of demon's souls laying around from NG that I want to forge some weapons with. Really want to make the cleaver and mess with those Demonbrandt swords etc.

That's one thing that saddens me. This is a great game, classic for sure, but in 5 or 10 years when I want to go back and play it for fun half of the experience will most likely be missing since there won't be people playing it and generating messages/bloodstains/phantoms. Who knows if the servers will even be up at that point either.

I just started playing this today as a Temple Knight, and have no idea wtf I'm doing. I breezed through 1-1 because I had played it the day DS came out, but haven't picked it up since.

I tried 1-2, and got raped by the four guys waiting at the end of the bridge after the third dragon breath section. I read that you can kill the dragon, so I may do that next :(

Question: What exactly is a level up in this game, and how do I tell when I hit it? Are people just referring to the skill points they purchase from the blind chick, or what?
