Weekend Discussion: Out Cold
by Chris Faylor, Dec 19, 2009 9:00am PSTHaving spent most of Friday in various airport terminals, it was an odd sensation to wake up in my own bed and see that the vaunted winter onslaught, which I'd heard so much about from overhead monitors and speakers, had actually arrived.
So after spending most of the week walking around Los Angeles in short sleeve shirts, I now need to dig my car out from its fluffy snow blanket. Welcome home, Faylor!

I've been on the phone with these illiterates for literally hours, and I am still stuck. I was instructed THREE DAYS AGO to go through a special request process by the website, with a guarantee that as soon as I validated the email (which I did) I would get an answer in 24 hours. Again, that was THREE DAYS AGO.
I've been passed off over 8 times to morons who can't even comprehend what I am asking, and are incapable of conveying the request clearly to the next person. They are rude, ignorant, and can't stop interrupting.
Anyone else make such a horrific mistake before? Of all the accounts to forget, how the Hell did I not move my Xbox Live pword? I can still log into Xbox but only because it's saved to the console, which I am about to give away to a family member because I bought an elite.
Get the mockery out of the way, and then make with the answers. I am enraged right now.

I didn't follow the movie much beforehand and I wasn't all that excited for it but I came away extremely impressed. It's not a classic, not in my books, but it was incredibly beautiful and highly entertaining. I hope he makes a sequel. Is that planned?
My stance on 3D hasn't changed a bit though. I'm glad I watched Avatar in 3D and I enjoyed it but it doesn't make me want to see another movie in 3D anytime soon. The last movie I watched in 3D was Beowulf back in 2007 and I'll be just fine if I don't see another 3D movie until 2011. That's the problem with 3D movies though. I enjoyed Beowulf only because it was in 3D and I'd still have loved Avatar even if it wasn't 3D. It can be hard to tell which movies are worth seeing in 3D and which stand on their own. I think Avatar would stand on it's own.
If anyone is on the fence about Avatar because they don't like 3D I hope you go watch it in the standard format or rent it when it comes out. It's James Cameron. Aliens, Terminator 1 and 2... the guy is a master at this sort of thing. The story won't blow you away but the world of Pandora will no matter what format you watch it in.

I really, really enjoyed Avatar. Obviously, the technological side of things was incredible--Pandora felt real, looked real, and sounded real.
I will say that the story is a little simple and the messages a little heavy handed. But upon further consideration, that's fine with me--that's not unusual for James Cameron, he did the same thing in The Abyss. But to be honest, I didn't mind: I prefer a movie that is simple, but incredibly well executed, over a movie that tries too hard to be complex and fails at it.
I think it's also incredibly important that you "buy into" Avatar. You have to completely suspend your disbelief. There were people in the audience snickering during some serious scenes involving Navi ceremonies and things like that, and of course they're gonna seem funny unless you go into that film with an open mind.
All in all, I loved it. I think it's an excellent modern piece of science fiction. You can tell Cameron put his heart and soul into the movie, because the amount of polish and depth to the details of Pandora shine through during the entire movie.

Gears of War 2 is a good game. People hurl shit on it for not being very cerebral and having an "I eat lions" attitude but it's great all around action fun. The rift worm level was wonderful, especially when my coop buddy got smushed by one of the giant teeth because AI controlled Baird got in his way and cut him off.
Negatives: What the hell have they done to the shotgun? It's useless. It only kills something when you've got an active reload and you stick the thing right in their face. The pistol is more useful than that thing.

Heineken in a 24 oz can.
I knew beer in a green bottle tasted like socks, but good lord! In a can, you can distinctly taste the sphincter that shat this liquid out. GROSS!

I'm planning my younger brother's party (in Vancouver next week) and need some ideas.
- No strippers/hookers/cocaine
- About 15-20 people
So... paintball? Getting him to dance with random chicks at the club? Renting a movie theatre to play video games? Strapping a sex doll to his back and making him walk around downtown? What do you guys think?

Do you guys think we were meant to eat meat?
"Brainwash!
It's easy to get enough protein and every other vitamins for that matter, you just need to know what foods to eat.
http://www.facebook.com/l/5e2de;www.veganstrength.org ... Now tell me that vegans can't get enough protein! (Bianca - you missed out on perving at these guys on world vegan day, one of them is really fineee!)
Most people are omnivores, not carnivores. We don't have teeth of carnivores (do a google image search on carnivore's teeth). Studies do show that humans are not meant to eat meat. We actually have the digestive system of a herbivore, not a carnivore. Carnivore's digestive systems process meat really fast where as ours doesn't (hence why it causes bowl cancer etc).
Other animals that eat meat, don't get sick from it. If we killed a chicken and ate it, we'd probably die. I'm sure if nature intended for us to eat animals, we wouldn't need to cook them. A lion doesn't kill a zebra, cook it and then eat it. I think some greedy fucker thousands of years ago just sat down and eventually came up with a plan on how to eat animals without getting sick.
The issue is always about living creatures being mutilated and abused. That is a massive problem today and all I intend to focus on for the moment.
Not everything on this planet is there for human use. We are not superior, we are all equal. Why does a cat, dog or any other animal deserve to be skinned alive just so humans can wear it's fur? Because their sole purpose on earth is to keep us warm? Yeah - right!
I'm proud to be a "hippie vegan tree-hugger" as you put it. Since becoming vegan, I have met the most amazing and compassionate people and feel truly blessed with the beautiful people I have in my life. It's just a shame there aren't more around. People are too self absorbed and the way they treat this world is deplorable."

I didn't listen. :( Seriously.. how do you fuck this up so God damn badly? It had barely been a year after the first one (Red Faction) and God damn. It looked shittier, it played shittier. I mean.. it was hands down about as shitty as it gets. It's like they had this game and it was imperfect and could have been great, they fucked that up because I don't know.. they rushed it or something and then came back a year later and decided to fuck the rest of it up by stripping some of the better features. What a piece of shit.
Who writes this dialogue too? The bad guys in Red Faction said shit like ... "Party Time!" and in Red Faction II they whine and say shit like "he was my cousin." Really? That's a huge coincidence man.. the two guys I shot before you said the same thing. I genuinely feel bad for Jason Statham for this piece of shit and that's after watching Crank and Crank 2 among many others.
On the plus side, the game was short. Next up is Red Faction 3: Guerrilla. lol....

7-8 years ago, sniping in Team Fortress Classic on a 80-120ms broadband was sometimes tough, but one could make it happen. Anything over about 150ms though, was out of the question.
Today, sniping moving targets in Team Fortress 2 on the Dallas Shackserver, which gives me a 50-75ms ping, is nigh impossible. At the 11-25ms ping I get on closer pub servers, I am picking people out of the air mid rocket/grenade jump, hitting moving targets no problem.
Is it just the Dallas server, or does TF2's netcode make sniping near impossible / inconsistent at anything over about a 35ms ping? I know there are other factors, like the ping of your target, packet loss, etc, but all things equal, the Dallas server is friggin HARD to connect sniper rifle shots on, with maybe 1 in 7 shots connecting, but i can switch over to an East Coast server and land >90% of my shots right on target.

The massive snowstorm on the East Coast this weekend has led to canceled and delayed flights--and a lot of aggravation on the part of Delta Air Lines customers. Because the only thing better than waiting for hours on hold to learn your flight's status or reschedule a flight canceled due to snow is listening to "Let it Snow." On a loop.
http://twitter.com/DeltaAirlines: "What a day! Celebrating 80 years of nonstop service today. Pass the cake!
This is why I hate American airline companies (including American, but not including JetBlue; never flew Southwest so I haven't developed an opinion on them).
