Age of Conan Offering 'Unlimited Free Trial' Through Year's End

By Chris Faylor, Dec 14, 2009 1:30pm PST Temporarily expanding the previous seven-day free trial, developer Funcom is offering an "unlimited free trial" for its PC MMO Age of Conan, which the company is now billing as "the most savage, sexy and brutal MMO ever created."

Anyone who downloads, registers, and starts playing the trial before January 1st 2010 will be able to enjoy all of level one to twenty...without ever having to upgrade to a full account or pay a subscription fee," explained the company. Trading, public chat, in-game mail and forum posting are restricted due to spam and gold farmer fears.

The promotion is being billed as "a unique holiday offer." Mythic's competing PC MMO Warhammer Online recently unveiled a similar promotion, offering an "endless" free trial with a level cap of ten, though Mythic has yet to specify an end date.

  • I honestly think AoC _now_ is a lot better now than what a lot of people give credit for. Sure it had a terrible launch and the quality went drastically downhill shortly after release, but anyone who plays it now, with new eyes, is in for a pretty damned enjoyable experience. I didn’t bother checking it out on release as I am turned off by games that are overhyped (cough Aion). They can rarely, if ever, actually deliver.
    I raised two chars to around lvl 50 before I stopped playing, and that was largely due to other commitments (cough female aggro).

    It has some great features, a great combat system and some of the best graphics around, period.
    Where it fails though, imo is:

    1. Casters handsdown own melee. If you want to PVP and are melee, expect to go through many tissues as you’re smashed with ease by casters.
    2. The PVP minigames, AoC’s version of WoW Battlegrounds, are snorefests (imo)
    3. The quests are all over the shop, someone needs to go over the whole game and streamline them like LOTRO is doing. Nothing worse than finishing one quest only to not be able to find more without running all over 3 huge zones to work out where the next logical hub is, and even then they’re running you all over the world.
    4. Combat for melee is latency sensitive (im from Australia, so it can further add to melee pvp frustration)

    There’s more, but that’s all that comes to mind right now. Despite those 4 points i listed, the game is still hugely underrated imo, and the good points far outweigh the bad. Point 3 is my single biggest issue though, and i am hoping the new expansion (which looks sweet incidentally) largely resolves it.
